Don`t know if this has been covered elsewhere ? No excuse to mention again required so there >>>> The Bob Read DVD`s set of four put out by International are gold, pure gold.
So many happy memories of Bob`s performanves revisited, plus all the info required,,,what else could a street entertainer wish for. First saw him perform many moons ago at a private gig in kent,,,doing the same stuff as on the DVD`s,,,we became occasional phone call pals and the free knowledge given by this very generous guy has stood me in good stead for many years,,,,and helped me get the right approach to doing the job. Although not a street magician as such,,,when you see his work you can see that had he turned to it we would all have been blown out the water, he would have been up in the Cellini class maybe higher who knows. All his material would stand well on the streets today but the secret real secret was within him. RIP old pal,,,you have left us a bible to cherish. Ken |

My first street act was Bob's stuff from Thanks to Pepys and I did it all very badly!
Bob was a great guy and while I never got to meet him personally he and I exchanged letters and emails. He loved buskers and had the heart and soul of a busker. He did actually busk but not on the street he would do impromptu shows in pubs. I agree that these DVDs are pure gold and should be on every magicians shelf. I will say that personally I was heartbroken that they did not have a performance of Bob doing the penultimate cups. Bob Read LOVED the cups and balls more than any other human on the planet and his routine is brilliant! Also ALL of Bob's printed material including thanks to pepys is on these disks in PDF format. That alone is worth the tripple digit sticker price. Wonderful, wonderful, stuff. Bob was the best and a hell of a good guy to boot. He ALWAYS had time for a busker and would go out of his way and above and beyond the call of duty to help you with any questions or research you might need. I loved the guy, He was probably the coolest guy I never met. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! These have been reviewed in a couple of places, such as here:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=111 I cannot overemphasize what an incredible performer this man was. I was privileged to be on that Mayfair walk that is shown on these DVD's. It was my birthday. What a way to celebrate!!!!

I'll never forget the day Bob took my wife and I on an historic pub tour in and around London (in his Jaguar). And the insane routine he did when the alarm went off in Vegas during his act at the WMS... Can't describe it.

I just got done watching "Bob Read...The Lost Footage", what a class act he was. Most of his performance on that DVD is from lectures for what looks like a magic club. I found it comical how the people there in the magic club audience were so flat and Mr Read never missed a beat. I will certainly benefit from the obvious treasure that he was...and is. I can see younger people watching this DVD though and thinking...man..this is so outdated. Class, skill and panache will never be outdated. He was obviously a study of magic, misdirection and theory and should be an immortal inspiration to many. Looks like I need to get the 4 DVD set now.

There was an full spread on Bob Read in one of the trade magazines and it detailed his Champagne Bottle Production. In the article, it stated that Bob would nail the magicians once, explain the inner working and proceed to nail them again. I thought it was literary hyperbole. Then I came across this clip...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdwKWTnCdL0 Dammit all if this guy didn't just nail me twice like the magazine article said he would. I even purposely told myself to look for the move on the second go around. Dude....
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.

I've had several of Bob's books for a very long time. One of my all-time favorites is the Penultimate Cups and Balls Routine. There is a PDF of this and all his other magic publications on this DVD set, by the way.
Anyway, I had heard that someone had pinched his prop case, so he had quit doing the routine. I e-mailed him, got a list of the various props he needed, and sent him the things he needed to do the routine. This was in early 2005. I met Bob at the Magic Circle Centenary in July of 2005. He came up to me with a sheaf of paper in his hand and said, "Here is 1/6 of the manuscript I'm working on about the cups and balls in graphic art. Take it up to your room and look at it at your leisure. Just make sure nothing happens to it." It was incredible!!!! And it was just 1/6 of the total manuscript. I got it back to him in about 2 hours. If you are a cups and balls freak, you will want this book.

Isn't it odd that we apreciate the talented most, after they are gone!
Bob Read,Ken Brooke etc etc,,, So lets not make this constant mistake >>>> I am now thinking of Pat Page !!! Ken |

Pat Page is a phenomenon, pure and simple. Another not to forget is Bobby Bernard. If you want the truth about what you are doing, ask Bobby. If you don't want to hear the truth, ask someone else.
Bobby is a walking encyclopedia of magic. He is also a devoted, practiced hypochondriac. Never ask him how he is doing if you are calling him long distance and you don't have Skype. He will tell you how he is doing. It may take a while. A friend of his who lives in the US now tells me that Bobby has had every disease in the world, including Dutch Elm Disease. His collection of magic books is dwarfed only by his collection of medical self-help books. But, if you are ever in London, look him up and take a lesson from him. It will be worth your money, and you will leave his flat a better magician.

Bobby Bernard, what a character, I've bumped into him many of times at the Blackpool convention...usually as I'm about to do buy something. "Don't buy that!" "that's not the way you spin a wand!" He's great.
