Zerostar, I can give you an answer but it will be a bit vague as it really depends on what you are going to use it for.
First of all is it an appearing or vanishing cane ?. Basically if you want to do colour changes then go for the Fantasio canes , I use these and they are excellent but do make sure that you buy the genuine Fantasio canes and not the poor imitation copies that are about. If in doubt buy from Fantasio himself !. If you want to vanish a cane, again go for the plastic Fantasio type unless you want to cut yourself or worse still lose a finger or two when it vanishes, (it never looks good for an audience when you change a cane into blood). If you are going to produce a cane then you could go for a metal cane but I prefer the plastic type and again it is less dangerous. The way I produce a cane means that I can use the plastic version better. If you want to change a silk to a cane then this can still be done with a Fantasio plastic cane. The real secret with plastic canes , and sadly this is where I have seen many magicians make the biggest mistake , is the care and looking after of the item. I strongly recommend the book that Fantasio put out as a good source of how to use and care for his canes, also his booklets too if you can still get them . I am lucky to have his full set and would never part with them. If you still want to go for the metal cane then apart from being a dangerous item , even when you are being careful with it , the care and maintenance that you will need for certain versions that require oiling just isn't worth the trouble, and you will get oil on everything else too. There are versions that they say "does not need oiling" but I would look "carefully" at these first if you really want a metal cane. For me, Fantasio canes are the way to go plus you have more scope for effects, colour changes etc. Hope this helps. Stuart Brown British Magical Champion Of Stage Manipulation 2007

For appearing cane I find nothing better than the harakaan metal cane. I appears at twice the speed and half the sound of a fantasio. It does not need oiling with proper care and I don't find it dangerous at all when used properly. They are difficult to obtain and a bit expensive however. One drawback of Harakaan canes is they come in one color...a sort of off black...attractive cane but no exact color match with any fantasio. But I have found the switch from a Harakaan to a black fantasio not perceptable under stage conditions when one is not immediately following the other. I have obtained a couple Harakaans from Stephens Magic. As for the disappearing cane, I prefer the plastic fantasio as I have seen many slicing accidents from metal disappearing canes.

I prefer the metal cane as well. It's fast and sure. the plastic canes are slow, and wobbly and seem less reliable to me. I only use an appearing cane and use the Magic King brand. Unfortunately they seem to be unavailable these days.

I also prefer the metal canes. I have been using a metal vanishing cane and I have never cut myself with it. I cannot imagine how it could be possible. I use the cheapest silver indian cane which looks very good onstage and I do a visual no cover cane to silks. The effect is so visual and impossible to laymen.

I use both the Appearing and Vanishing plastic canes from Fantasio. I like them very well, but having never used a metal cane, I wonder if I would even want to, because I like the Fantasio canes so well.
And, with the Fantasio vanishing cane, you can get the dancing cane gimmick, and use the same cane for two effects! Danton

I guess I should prob try a metal disappearing, I have never even given it a try. I had Barry of Barry's magic shop demo one for me some years back and after one demo..."we have a bleeder!"..there was blood everywhere. He wrapped his hand and said "ok..let me show you a fantasio." Guess that one image stuck with me awhile.

Fantasio will work just as well.
You just need to know how to use them. PM me for a tip to make an appearing cane snap better. Hope I can help. -Brandon

It depends on the effect you want to achieve. The speed of the plastic cane can never be compared to the speed of the plastic one. If you like a visual no cover vanish or appearance of a cane then the metal cane is the answer. If you want every body to see how it works then buy the plastic one. About cutting yourself with the matal canes, I've used them for 15 years now and I have never had any accidents. And I am not especially carrefull.

Wanted to say the speed of a metal cane cannot be compared to the speed of a plastic one.
