I'm about to start a journal to keep track of suck magic related subjects (ideas, methods, presentation structure, journaling performances, etc...).
Any ideas on a good, organized journal? Thx!

Why in the world would you want to keep a journal of "suck" magic related subjects?
Why not something more fruitful, like good magic related subjects? Gerald Edmundson's the Ostrich Factor has some good suggestions on practice journals, ideas, organizing them, etc. I do hope that was a typo.

Don't do what I did when I started keeping notes on magic ideas and inventions (my own). Don't write everything down in one journal, where an idea for a magic trick is followed by convention notes (yes, I used to go to those!) or by ideas from conversations with fellow magicians, etc. Now in my dotage, when I could make good use of those notes, I can't find anything.
One good thing I did was to keep my journals in bound notebooks, rather than looseleaf notebooks. That way, if a page is missing, it leaves a trace tear mark and you know something was removed. On the edge of the tear mark, I would always write a note explaining why the page was torn out and dating it. If I were starting over, I would keep several bound notebooks in yearly clusters. One would be just for inventions, another for routines, and a third for ideas from meetings and ideas from conversations. I envy Albus Dumbledore's pensieve.

Do you want to do this online? With something online, folks can contribute, etc.
For online discussions, you could just set up a blog. They provide ways to organize things. Check out http://wordpress.org Good luck.

Here's another thread on keeping a journal. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=41&21
I keep my journal in an Excel spreadsheet. One tab is a performance history of what I've performed, providing a valuable reference on what works for me and what doesn't. One tab contains a list of the tricks I want to keep in rotation. As I mainly do card tricks, I have this list divided into sections. One section contains tricks I can do impromptu with any deck, one section contains tricks I can do with any deck with a little preparation, one section contains tricks that require an extra prop, etc. to be on hand, etc. Other tabs contain notes on tricks from various magic books I reference. Those with an interest of magic often get exposed to far more magic than they can ever actually practice/perform, and the journal can provide a road map through what one wants to practice/perform. |

Let every thought you conceive of, even/especially the stupid ones or the ones that seem to make no sense, flow onto the page. If you edit them at this point, you might lose some precious gem of an idea that will only flower into something amazing later after a lot more thought. Anything and everything goes into the journal! Revisit your "stream of consciousness" journal often and play with the ideas you find there - and THIS is where you do your editing, in yet another journal! You will begin to find your journal is your best friend and greatest inspiration. Good luck! David Parr gives some very good advice on this process in his book, "Brain Food". G

Got some useful ideas Even if you're using a blog or something that you have to use the computer (like Excel spreadsheet), try to have a notebook with you. Sometimes you have a great idea or information and you're far from your computer. The faster you register it, more detailed it will be.

If you have a smart phone or an ipad or something of that ilk there's an app I use for note taking called Springpad. You can include links to sites, take photos and include those in your notes and easily organise everything using tags. Plus it syncs online, so as long as you have access to a browser you can always check your note or add to them . I highly recommend it.
