I am learning Cups & Balls at the moment and I have several sets of Crochet Balls, but I wish I had those mini-baseball balls. Where can I find them?
I have the Micheal Ammar C&B DVDs Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. He uses those cute little Baseball Balls and I wish I had a set of those myself. All I need to know now is where to find them. Also, what kind of balls are other people using and where to find them? Thank you Keith |

I just use the red crochet balls that came with my cups, but a quick internet search and I came up with these. I can't promise good quality or prices with these, as I said it was a 5 minute search. Once the search function on the Café is back up and running, you'll get access to better sources on where to obtain balls. Also some people have tried the Oriental trading company, but I am not sure if it was for final loads only.

I heard that home depot had mini baseballs as lamp chain fobs super cheap- you might want to check there...

I checked out the Baseball link and they are the balls that I want, but they cost $65 in Australian currency. How much that is in US currency I don't have a clue, but sounds extremely expensive. If it is $65 then there is no way I am paying that much!
On the History Channel I saw how they make real baseballs, it was very interesting how it is done. The tennis balls look great, and the price is great too, when Penquin Magic gets them back in stock I will order them. Monkey fist is something I can make on my own, just remembered that I have books on knots, therefore I will go ahead and do just that! |

Yeah, nice balls are very expensive. I have heard that the Australian baseballs are really good quality. After shipping, they will cost about $65 USD.
Also, you can make monkey fist balls for really cheap (about $10), but it takes a LONG time. Leather/Suede balls sometimes stick to the cups and close up mat, making some moves harder to perform. However, these balls are easier to palm, so it's just a trade-off. |

If you're in the UK check out Davenports Magic in London, they do red and white crochet balls last I checked and sometimes have other sample items too (like steel ball bearings ala Paul Gertner) or baseballs/basketballs etc.

Why do you wish you had them? Is it because they roll less than the crochet balls?
Although my baseballs roll a little less than the crochet balls, they still can pick up a pretty good head of steam on the way off my close-up mat. They aren't a panacea for the cups-and-ball's roll problems. If your wallet is anything of a factor for you, I'd stick with crochet balls for now. If you want them just because they look cool, then disregard the above. Bill |

Chech out RnT II for all sorts of crocheted balls. They've got many patterns and colors. A bit on the expensive side, but I'm sure of high quality.

When I look at the Micheal Ammar DVD Cups and Balls, I watch him with the baseballs, it just looks like the balls are easier to grip than the crocheted balls. The baseballs also look like they have aged as if Micheal Ammar has been working with them forever, giving them a sentimental value.
Also, I just think it is a good idea to try different balls so that I have enough experience to determine what works best for me. The crocheted balls that I have come in different sizes which I like, but they are extremely light. Wish there was a little more weight to them, so I am going to make my own Monkey Fist balls using leather string if I can find them somewhere. |

When you finish the Monkey Fist balls, you should post some pics of them. I may try to make some for myself as well, but I think Im gonna try something other than leather.

I finally made my first sets of Monkey Fist balls using Leather Laces. The first set of balls were made without an inner core ball, so this set is abouyt 19mm in size and is better used in the mini cups that I just bought.
The second Monkey Fist ball set was made with a 1/2" round wooden ball (Bead), and ended up with a size of 23mm. This is about the size of my finger thickness and great for finger palming, and can be used in either Mini cups or Regular cups. I think this is the best size of all three sets. The third set was made using a 3/4" round wooden bead and the leather lace wrapped around 4x instead of 3x used in the first two sets. This ball is big enough that it would have to hide behind two fingers. I am trying to decide if I should have wrapped it 5x instead of 4x because there are two places where the inner ball is shown, but most if it is covered. Hopefully the fact that the inner ball is visual in two places does not matter. I am glad I took the time to do this project on my own without having to spend big bucks buying from others. I have three sets of 4 balls that cost less than $30. Only bad news is that I have sore fingers from all the work that I did in the past two days, but it was well worth it. My next step is to make a set of Baseballs using real leather and using the same 3/4" wooden bead. Before I begin I need a pattern, this is something that I am going to have to play around with by first using paper. This is a wait-and-see project. Later Keith |
