I know your comments were not directed at me, but I think that if we are going to criticize others, then we have to be willing to criticize ourselves. I am perfectly willing to recognize and accept my own flaws and shortcomings. I also have some stage rust that I am still working to shake off. I've only performed 6 times in 2 years - Yikes!
Lighting was out of my control - it was a competition, and you get what you get. Something that really must be addressed - when I was a finalist at IBM 2005 we had our own tech rehearsal to get sound and lighting perfect. Regional comps need to allow for more control if they want the competitors to be showcased in their best light (no pun intended). I did ask for a blue wassh and all back lighting to be taken out, but that didn't happen. Nothing I could have done about that. But, even if it was seen, I challenge anyone other than Christian Compton to try to do the cane work I did. The skill and technique should still be apparent regardless of lighting. Cigars are a place holder and will be gone soon. I am working on more of the knife manipulation, and more of the coin and money manip - you forgot about those. For those who have seen the Mack The Knife routine, I've added a knife split and a double color change. I've also changed the coin work a little and added back in a bill production, with a very cool final vanish of the coin. Tom Burgoon's lecture gave me some ideas for this sequence that I am going to explore a little more... On the video the cane is beautiful, and all of the manipulation looked very good. And because the camera could zoom in, the cigar manip looks great too. I am debatting about whether to post the video though, because one side of my hat was tilted down, and that bothers me. I'd rather people not see the act that way. To see the act prior to the additions (and what won 2nd place at Carnival last year) go to http://youtube.com/watch?v=jVABIUNNgRE You'll see what I mean about the cane work on video. Since you mentioned it, I was comfortable on stage - Despite the stage rust. I am one of those weird people who is more comfortable in front of an audience of strangers than sitting one on one with friends and collegues. But put me in front of an audience and I am so at home... |

I used to like the walnut trick you did John... I just don't really like stuff like knives and cigars on stage. Not big enough for my taste.
I have some multiplying balls, but imagine if they were brown... minus the cane the act, while I like it, seems more like a close-up or maybe parlor act... just my opinion

As a member of ring 58 I appreciate all the kind remarks made about this years WCM. Out of the 34 held I have missed two and they seemed to get better every year. The gala show is by far the most difficult item to excel in. I was one of the people who got the very first show together and I we spent about a quarter of our total budget($200) on it. Now our budget is thousands of dollars but the price of the top stage performers has gone way beyond that. We used to close with a big illusion act, but no more. I think, and apparently other Café members think the same, that under todays conditions Mike Stratman once again assembled an outstanding group of performers for the Saturday night show
As the organiser of the closeup contest I would like to dispel two rumors. Yes, some people werent very happy about having two professionals in the contest but obviously their cries were ignored. However,ONCE AGAIN THEY DEMONSTRATED THAT THE CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS IN A MAGIC CONTEST ARE NOT THE SAME AS REQUIRED FOR A SUCCESSFUL PROFESSIONAL ACT. Entertainment value is only one factor in a contest. Originality counts for considerably more. Secondly, I assembled the judges and I never asked Big Daddy to be one! SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR drjeb |

Dr JEB,
Thanks for the enlightening post. I agree that Mike Stratman once again put together a wonderful lineup for the shows. Terry Evanswood is a charming and adept performer, and his show is improving every day. I know that the criteria for judges is stiff, and we use only the best - thanks for the clarification. Wow, $200 for the first show...that is incredible. My how times have changed! Next year is 35 years! Day 17
Magic is an art. I am merely a tour guide.
