Re: Joining Kidabra.

Yes. I am not sure where Whitehall is but we have a very active chapter near Philly in South Jersey, actually. Kidabra is my favorite magic club because it is not about the tricks, so much as routining and the practical things.

Sean, I personally don't use a contract for a birthday party unless the parent asks for one. They are not worth enforcing, and people rarely read them. I do get 1/2 up front. If it is a big job, then a contract is in order. Feel free to download a contract from my DJ site and modify it to your needs. http://Awesome-DJ.com

Has anyone looked at this yet. I listened to the call and it sounded really good, but I wanted to get some opinions on it first.

I listened to the call and I've met John Carlson. I haven't purchased that, but from what I know he's a top notch guy and I'm sure you can call him with any questions.

Actually the children's contest at SAM 4 got postponed as the January 17th meeting did not have much of a turn out due to a really bad snowstorm that came rolling in and caused major taffic issues. I heard that they postponed the contest to another month. I will see if I can find that out and what month it has been moved to. It would be great seeing you there Sean. Al and myself are both members and tend to compete in the contest from time to time. Dennis is usually always there as well so ask around and we can introduce him to you.

My apologies Kyle
After I posted the date of our childrens competition I realized the contest was scheduled for last week, so now we are out of order. In any case Sean go to our meeting ask anyone there who Dennis is, and he will help you out.

Sean
This is the first I have heard of John Carlson's thingy. John is a friend of mine, he is a first class magician, a very busy guy who has more work than he can handle, and a very honest fellow who's judgement I trust. John and Dennis will be great sources of information for you.

Ken Scott's stuff on birthdays put money in my pocket. If you are going to work part time get involved with some of your local booking agents and party planners. They will throw you plenty of part time work with little investment on your part.

The most important thing I think is to really like kids, develop a performing character that kids like, and to go out of your way to have a really fun, magical, and enjoyable show.

Best,

Dan-

But if you have a top notch show, don't let an agent sell you too cheaply!!

I always say that whe working or deciding to work with an agency or agent, make sure you interview THEM just as much as they interview you. Afterall they are an extension of you just as much as you are an extension of their business. it is a two way street.

I feel a bit stupid, but I have never been to any magic convention.

How do people compete in children's magic? It seems to me children would have to be there and judge. I don't know about the rest of you, but much of my show requires the kids interaction, and it would not be nearly as good if performed just to adult magicians.

Captain
It is not a convention, it is a local magic club competition. I do not pretend to be an expert on it, but I will try to explain. At SAM 4 we have close up, stage, comedy, and children competitions. I believe at the childrens competition we have an audience of children, and the effect that each contestant has on the children is a magor factor in the judging. I do not know a good definition of childrens magic or comedy magic, but we do get a lot of contestants. I will be competing in the stage competition this year mainly because I do understand the definition of stage.

OK, an audience of children makes sense.
