Steve,
Unfortunately, I do not know much about you, but after reading the upcoming posts I am sure I will! I am a 14 year old magician who has been involved with magic for the past 5 or 6 years. I do not do many paying gigs yet, but I would like to start soon. Do you have any advice to get people to take me more seriously? I do not necessarily want to do paying parties yet, but getting my name out in my community for doing free gigs is fine with me for now. People do not seem to take me that seriously as they see me just as a 14 year old who just wants a buck and isn't in magic for the smiles and reactions he gets. I know that I may have to wait a few more years to start doing parties but I would just like a way to get my name out there. I have done shows for the retirement centers in my community which were a nightmare, but I would still like to get out there a bit. Thanks Steve (and anyone else who puts in) for the advice! -Evan |

When I was your age, I spent most of my time daydreaming about magic in school. I even secretly performed tricks during class. While many of my classmates found my tricks amusing, teachers told me to stop fooling around, confiscating my cards and sending me to the principals office, they always called my parents and I would be grounded... so I don't reccomend any of the above. However, to answer your questions: Evan, do as many shows as you can. If you don't like performing at retirement centers, practice your skills with kids closer to your own age. Cub Scout meetings, school talent shows, kid's brithday parties. If you want to be taken more seriously and get your name out into the community... donate your services to your local children's hospital, youth center, library, etc. Charitable shows often create publicity. Good luck Evan.

Yep, I am very lucky since those are the magic celebs just from the ones that went to my school. Other magic celebs from da-ville are Mac King, Fielding West, the prestidigious Louisville Magic Club's president and inventor of Sketch-O-Magic David Garrard, and all the many local magicians in one of the largest and most well run magic clubs that have all helped me out big time in trying to acheive my dreams.
