With budget in mind, I will probably skip the stands for now, but I do understand the principals. I'll probably invest in the stands when I start back doing school shows next year, until then it's fairly small venue anyway.
The one place for now that I may need them is at a game room which does parties. I am in the process of making arrangements to do birthday parties there, and will have a need for good amplification. I could make some stands to just leave there.

Often you can get speaker stands thrown in if you're buying a new unit.
Look for a package deal.

I have the PD-250 and I love it. It is the same size as the 150 but it is heavier. However, if you are concerned about power the 250 might be an option. I like to have plenty of headroom, but I am a professional musician also. If I were only doing magic shows I might try a 150 myself. On the other hand, some of my magic gigs have been festivals with large crowds, in large arenas, or outdoors, so sometimes I need the extra power. Most of the time that's not the case with magic though.

The 250 seems strange to me. A bunch of small speakers for that power?
I would suggest that if you need that much power, it's probably becuase you're outside and in that case you should look to get a system with larger drivers. DJs use big woofers on their speakers at big venues and outdoor venues for a reason. Large drivers push a larger volume of air and will reach your audience a lot better outside than small drivers. You can't argue with physics. "But they use Bose drivers... oooh... ahhhh... " you say? In case anyone believes everything they read/hear about Bose ( or Bang and Olfson for that matter) those 2 companies are nothing more than marketing magicians. For the same price (and a bit of research) you can find far far far superior quality for a fraction of the cost. Often 1/10 the cost. Speakers, audio, etc... Case in point: Looking for headphones for you iPod ? Thinking of getting Bose? Of course you are. They're on the radio all day long. Instead do some research and get the "Grado SR60" for a fraction of the cost. I've known about Grado for 25 years becuase I did research a long time ago. http://www.gradolabs.com/product_pages/sr60.htm You can get the Bose and impress your friends and people that see you wearing them or you can get the Grado phones and impress yourself with the sound. I got them shipped free for my daughter for christmas and she has never worn her ipod phones since. Anytime you buy Bose or B&O you're making a mistake financially in terms of quality/sound. Unless you're just interested in people SEEING that you own those products to be cool there's much better stuff out there for much cheaper. The bad news is that people that already bought Bose will get defensive and angry if you try to set them straight. Such is life. A bit off topic. Sorry. I could not help myself.. 'nuff said about that.

Well, of course you are not going to get the coverage with the PD-250 speakers that you will with bigger speaker cabinets that can house larger woofers. The PD-250 does pump out decent power though and the speakers handle it fairly well. For a self-contained system of it's size, I think the Passport's power and sound quality is pretty amazing.
I have a larger PA with a set of 15" EV's that I use when I need them. Sometimes I use the EV's with the Passport when I don't need massive power but rather have a large area to coverage. When I do that I usually use the Passport speakers as moniters, or either for side coverage if I am semi-surrounded. In fact, I used to have another mid-sized PA system that I used for this type of situation, but I sold it once I got the Passport. I only wish that Fender would make a new system like the PD-500, but with less power. I am thinking a PD-200 would be perfect for my use. I love the features of the PD-500, but I do not need or want all that power. I would like to see a Passport system with the same features as the PD-500 with less power and less weight. Even though it is as a power rating two times that of the old PD-250, it only weighs a couple of pounds more. It is loaded with a lot more features too. If Fender would make a 200, or a 250 watt version with the features of the new 500 that weighed about 10-15 pounds less I would be thrilled and buy one as soon as I could.

Regan, I knew you already knew that but many people do not or choose to ignore the facts. I also think many people set up their system and never hear what it sounds like from all the way in the back. It sounds very different.
What featues do you like in the 500? That thing looks huge.

Frank, I like my Deluxe PD-250, but I like the features of the Deluxe PD-5OO a lot better.
Here are some of the comparisons between the PD-500 to the PD-250): 1. 8 (6 XLR) channels as opposed to 6 (4 XLR) 2. Seperate bass/treble controls as opposed to a single control for bass and treble, 3. Pad switch to help adjust the gain for the input signal (Not on the 250) 4. Built in digital effects processor as opposed to reverb (the reverb on the 250 is preset too; you can only control the amount sent to the channel(s). 5. 48v Phantom Power as opposed to none 6. 8" speakers as oppsed to 6.5" (The speakers are designed by Celestion as opposed to Bose. I don't know if it is an improvement or not, but they are supposed to be more efficient and enhanced sound and weight reduction. 7. 500 watts as opposed to 250 watts (More than I need for this type of system but if it can pump out twice the power, sound as good, have all these extra features, and still weigh virtually the same I consider it an improvement) 8. Weighs 53 lb. as opposed to 55 lb. (It actaully weighs in at 2 lbs. less!) 9. One thing the PD-250 has that is not on the 500 is the VIP feature. I never use it and have wondered from the beginning why they didn't leave that off and add another tone cotrol 10. Moniter out and moniter channel controls The 500 has moniter capibilites not on the 250) Well, there is 10 differences. There are probably more. Like I said, I would prefer the features of the PD-500 in a lighter package with less power. I think 200 watts would be ideal for my needs, but I'd settle for 250. I was holding my breathe and hoping Fender would upgrade the PD-250 and model it after the 500, but they didn't. They came up with the PD Deluxe 250 Plus with the built-in CD player. I don't really care for the built-in CD player and it does not have the digital effects processor. The one advantage that the PD-250 has over the 500 is DC power. The 250 can be run on DC power (with optional equipment) but the 500 cannot. Regan

I think the Celestion driver is probably a big improvement. Lots of amps use those drivers. They're good.
You probably can run the 500 off DC. You just need a hefty power inverter or a generator if nothing else.

Yeah, you are right about the Celestions. I had a 100 Watt Marshall guitar amplifier that was loaded with Celestions. It was a JCM 900 Series (2300) head with 2 speaker cabinets. The speaker cabs were 1960A & 1960B, and they each had four, 12" Celestion speakers. 100 watts of Marchall powere coming through eight, 12" Celestion speakers.........Wow! Or ouch, depending on preference!
The celestions are fabtastic! I used that setup as my main stage amp for a long time. You're probably right on the DC power conversion too, but the DC unit Fender makes for the other Passport systems will not work with the 500. They don't make one for it that I know of. Regan

Yeah, right! I don't know when Bose came about, but I know Celestions have been around for a long time. I'm pretty sure they were putting them in Marshall amps all the way back in the 60's. I know I heard of Celestions a long time before I ever heard of Bose. And when I did hear of Bose, it was more in the field of car stereo equipment if I am not mistaken.

How about in terms of setup Cody? Do you find that one sets up quite a bit faster?
Or about the same? Frank

Here's some interesting info about Bose by the way. Hopefully they
won't sue me like they did Consumer Reports for giving their products a bad review. http://www.firstadopter.com/fa/archives/001749.html
