Over all, a pretty bad fight card, but I"m still getting it.
Do you guys think that Brock Lesner has a chance of being a contender in the UFC? I hope not.

Bad fight card? Ca'mon... Frank Mir, Antonio Nogueira, Jeremy Horn, Tyson Griffin... I am more excited to see Horn fight again rather than Mir/Lesnar or Sylvia/Nog.
After watching UFC All Access I have a little but more respect for Brock's game, but he is still going to lose. Mir looks like he is in better shape then he was against Hardonk or Vera. I am thinking that the Sylvia/Nog fight may be boring as hell though, seeing as it's a Tim Sylvia fight... Hoping Nog wins though.

So is this something on regular cable TV? About when at night is it on?

No it's PPV. Usually they only have the UFC events that are in the UK and the UFC Fight Night events aired for free on tv.
UFC 81 is Feb 2nd.

I was a bit shocked and missed the last fight.
BUT over all not a bad night till then. Brock didn't shock me until they did the interview with him. He actually showed some class, which shocked me. You don't just go in and fight a former champion. I think they handled it all wrong in my book. Should have let him develop some more. I know he has name recognition, but really, he was not quite ready. I hope that he does continue.

This was a very interesting fight night.
Brock Lesnar vs Frank Mir I have to say that Brock looked ready for the fight, however; Mir didn't look all that focused. Seconds into the first round Mir threw a leg kick, but was just toppled over by Brock. Effortless takedown on Brock's part. He ended up in Mir's half guard I believe, and started to rain down what initially looked like a mean ground and pound attack. And looked like the fight was about to be stopped for a TKO win for Brock. But after watching it again, Mir was able to just barely intelligently defend himself, but Brock just seemed to be flailing his arms, throwing punches and hammer fists with no care as to how or where they landed. And he eventually struck Mir in the back of the head a few times because of it. So the Ref stepped in, gave Mir a time out for recovery from the illegal strikes and taking 1 point away from Brock. When they fight started again, Mir threw a couple more leg kicks, but was just forced back to the ground by Brock's strength and size. Brock wound up in Mir's Full guard and was again throwing punches at Mir, but Mir was doing a much better job defending them, and even going for multiple submissions in the attack. So Brock gets to his feet and is bent over throwing punches at Mir, not landed anything too serious, and then Mir sets up a beautiful leg lock on Brock's right leg. I am not sure if it was a knee bar or a heel hook, but Brock tapped pretty quick. Tim Sylvia vs Antonio Nogueira This was looking pretty bad for Nog in the first round. He was doing... alright trading punches with Tim. But Tim was getting the better of it, and then he was able to knock Nog on his butt with a hard punch. Tim went in to try and GNP for a win btu Nog was able to defend, and eventually Tim stood up and backed out of Nog's guard and had the fight stood back up. And at the end of first round Nog was able to take Tim down with a nice trip while in the clinch. Second round was back and forth. They both landed some nice combos, but Nog had a few failed takedown attempts. Eventually Nog was able to take Tim down, but getting into a clinch and falling back, onto his back with Tim in his guard. Again Tim threw some punches but didn't want to stay on the ground with the blackbelt in bjj, and stood up like before and tried to back away to have the fight stood up. Nog was wise to this, and was able to keep half guard around Tim's right leg and grab a hold of time left with his arm. This led to Tim basically on all fours with Nog under him. Nog had both of his legs wrapped around Tim's right leg and his right arm hooked around Tim's left leg. This allowed Nog to sweep Tim and end up on top. Looked like he was going for a north south position anaconda choke, Tim tried to escape and Nog was able to sink in a very deep guillotine choke and Tim tapped out.

In the good ol' days my Navy pals and I would get drunk and put money into a pot and a massive fist fight in an alley or park would take place until there is a winner, the winner gets the money and we all have another beer. Y'all would have loved it.

I agree Good eats rocks, but we have a guy from our rural area featured in the local paper as an up and coming UFC fighter, and he was on the card last night. I checked out some websites and saw the video. His name is Tim Boetsch and he dominated David Heath last night with a first round win. The commentators (is one of them Joe Rogan?) and the website posters all were impressed with his fight, in style and force. Any of you UFC fans see this one?

Yes that is.
I think that was the guy who took the fight on 10 days notice right? I was really impressed truthfully. I actually won a dollar on him! He threw more knees to the guy than a kneeler gets on Sunday morning! It was amazing. If it was not him, it was still a great reference!

That was the guy, the one with 10 days notice.
Since our paper covered his going to Vegas, I would have thought that a Sunday edition would have mentioned his win in the sports section. But then again, this was Saturday night on PPV, and I don't see them getting the information until today, so I hope they put it in Monday's paper. They usually post the day's paper by 4am. It's 2:30 now, no update yet. I can't say I'm a huge fan of UFC, but I am more drawn to a realistic fight system like that than boxing. Adding gloves to boxing to "gentrify" it may have made it more palatable to the upper class they wanted to draw to the matches in the late 1800s, but as we've seen with Ali and others, repetitive stress injuries do more long term damage. Bare knuckle brawls usually end quickly, and even in the case of acute injury, healing happens. Getting your head knocked around your neck over and over for an hour, that can't be good. UFC looks more brutal to the average layman, but my understanding is that it's actually much less dangerous in the long term. |

Yeah that fight Tim Boetsch was impressive. The way he threw David to the grown was amazing heh, I'd like to see Tim fight Houston Alexander.
