You need to re-think the wording of the "puzzle".
First of all, the title says: "Is my rolex fake?" and yet the text poses the final question: "Is the watch real?" The text begins by saying "...you just purchased a Rolex off ebay". So it's a Rolex. The watch sounds real to me, so I would answer "no" to the first question and "yes" to the second. I think you are trying to set a certain type of philosophical question (like the one about the old galleon ship whose parts are slowly replaced by new ones, while the old ones are used to build a replica in in the dry dock) but you have got the wording all wrong.

Fake, since the second hand moves that way.

Interestingly, the knowledge of the Rolex second hand's movement can give a false negative.
Common knowledge says that the second hand on a real Rolex 'sweeps' while the fakes 'tick'. This is not completely accurate; on a real watch the second hand's movement is a series of very small ticks, each about a fifth or a quarter of a second. Once someone took my watch from me, stared at it for about thirty seconds and then announced that it was a fake, as the second hand was 'ticking'. In retrospect I wish I had suggested a large wager on the subject... Take care, Ian |

Top Hat - you're thinking too hard. You'll burst a blood vessel that way.
Thomas wins - a Rolex does not tick once a second but several times per second creating the impression that hand is sweeping around the face. |

I guess my post was too cryptic.
"6 on the tech end" is a spoonerism. Switch the initial consonant sounds of SIX and TECH END and you get "ticks on the second." Stan Alger |

Stan the man does it again. I actually tried to decypher that one but couldn't.

Tomas,
I deserve an "F" for communication. Such kind words will only encourage my mischievous ways. I was hoping my post would appear as nonsense to anyone who hadn't solved the riddle. Since the "answer" didn't even register with Nicholas, I failed. |

Sorry stanalger, I missed your spoonerism... not to suggest you are not a shining wit!

Nicholas,
Very good! That should shut me up! (And yours makes sense both ways. Bravo!) |

The guy makes a poor riddle in my opinion.
"It is identical in every way to a Rolex watch." is contradicted by "The second hand ticks once a second, every second...". If it's identical, then the second hand sweeps. If the second hand ticks, then it's not identical. Jason

Not only the second hand, but the fact that it is "perfectly in time with the atomic clock" might be a clue. Rolexs aren't THAT accurate. Heck, some of the fakes probably keep better time. lol!
