Does anyone make a 12 inch set of half dyed silks? I currently use a 16 inch set which I used with a palmo ball. I would like to use just one standard dye tube to hold all three 12 inchers. Thanks!

Try Richard Hughes. His products are top quality and he's great to deal with. http://www.hughesmagic.com Doug |

I use a 12" Diamond (which looks like a 18) for one of the colors and a regular 18" for the other color. I start out with a regular 18" white and use the Red diamond for the initial color change. I know it will work with Laflin's Palmo.
Or you could use 12" silks and just use your 15" Half-Dye with a Palmo. What is wrong with your current set? Just curious why you want to go to a smaller size, as a Palmo is just as easy to work with as a Dye-tube? Also, you said 16" set, Is the Half-Dye 16"? Billy McComb and the Half-Dyes I have seen were all 15". I do mine to music so I use a Palmo rather than the traditional two (2) Dye-Tubes. Otherwise you will have to find a custom made set, like from Richard, if you want to go smaller.

Yeah, I do the routine with one palmo to avoid switching the 2 dye tubes. I want to do the trick for walk around and I think it's easier for me anyway not to flash in a close up situation if I have a smaller set to use just with a dye tube rather than the palmo.

I am going to weigh in on this a bit as I just put the half dyed in my routine. Obviously, I do not have the years of experience performing it that Billy had but I had a few very good experiences with it.
I looked at Duane Laflin's Palmo routine. It is good but I do not think it plays as strong as Billy's original routine. No one questions the use of two tubes or the reasoning at all. It also allows you to use much bigger silks. One tip is to mark the tubes so you can tell the second tube by feel. I also mark my tubes so I know which end is uppermost in my hand when I start to push the silk in. This eliminates the 180 degree rotation if it is not right. I also made my own tubes slightly larger than Billy's. They fit my fingers better and allow my copping of the tube easier. Of course, the best part of Billy's routine was the patter and that comes with years of experience. I can think of three different presentations I saw him do. I think the half dyed would be ok with diamond silks except that I like to show the full silk. It makes the silk seem more normal to the layman. I can and half made 12" half dyed silks. I cannot tell you offhand what size dye tube they would fit but I do think ovally the tube makes it seem less noticeable. Closeup, I don't think I would worry about using the palmo. If the blocking is good with the proper patter, you will have plenty of cover with the silks and keep their attention on your words. Richard

My suggestion is to make your own. I have performed half dyed in my act for years, and the silks start to get "raggy" after a bit so I bought some red dye at CVS and made my own. You will need 3 white 12" silks. What you want to do is make your own red silk and then make the half dyed silk out of the same dye so the colors come out matching. You can do it!! It's not rocket science.

Yes, you can dye your own silk. Billy expalined it all in his book "25 years wiser". It doesn't always work though. You will ruin a few silks until you get the hang of it.
You are right. I always dye the solid silks the same time I do the half dyed. I also never use any silk thinner than 6 momme. A lot of the silks are 5 momme and do not hold up as well as 6, especially in this tight packing application. When do dye the silks, do several of them at once. The dye is not cheap. Better dye can be found at craft stores. They will also have instructions how to use the dye. Richard

I've made my own half dyed silk sets for years and years. I use Colorhue Silk Dye as it is colourfast and extremely easy to apply as it bonds instantly to the proteins in silk.
I usually make mine up in Yellow Green or Yellow Blue as it just drives me crazy that everyone uses White Red simply because that's the way they originally saw it done.

Good point, Payne.
Richard, could you expound on why you thing Billy M's version with two dye tubes is better than using one palmo? Thanks. Jim

I have a 12" half dyed silk set. It is red, blue, and red/blue. It was given to me, but the packaging says it is from "Crimble Silks" "the finest silk products for the next generation of magic". I googled this, but didn't get any hits, I don't know if they are still in business or not. Thought this might give you at least a little help though. Maybe someone else knows how you can contact them.

It was Trimble silks. They were a flash in pan and lasted about 4 years is all.

James in LA in the Mccomb routine he "pops" the silk up from his hand by pushing the silk from the bottom of his fist. This is when he tells them that he has two silks. Billy mentions that this is almost an applause cue or something like that.

Billy's routine was not done to music, it is a talking routine. Billy's patter is very important to the routine if performed like he did it with no music. Very funny and entertaining!
I have seen several magicians do it to music and there is not justification for the switch in a musical setting in my opinion. It is much stronger with no switch when done to music.

Richard,
I had totally forgotten about the Trimble Silks. Are there any survivors there? Or did life just get too busy to continue? Perhaps a great product for you or Spellbinder or some other magic "catalogger" to produce is a directory of "magic suppliers who vanished". Some produced really great props. There is one thing I really like about the dye-tube vs. the palmo and that is the way you can make the silk pop out of your hand with a dye-tube.
