Can anyone suggest or direct me in the right direction for a safe leg restraint to use while escaping a straight jacket hanging upside down? I've looked for carriers of bungee jumping equipment, but can't find a retailer. Someone suggested using police leg restraints, but I'm not sure if the chain would be able to hang someone with. Anyone with a suggestion or directions?

Do a search on this group .......
you will see it is not a simple "get this do that"... the general advice in the past has been RESEARCH! It may save your life. I have seen some things in books that were advised in teh pst but not sure I would trust them. |

Useing a restraint as a hanging harness is like sticking your head in a gas oven,,,don`t do it,,,,,,or make your will out to me first,,then go ahead !!

So, then what do you use to hang upsidedown? Just regular rope?

We use circus loops. They are a continuous loop of rope that is covered by a soft material. We were turned onto them by Mark Cannon. They are hand made by a gentleman in Ohio. Before he weaves the ends together to make a loop, he puts on an oval metal ring, which will then be attached to your pick point, crane hook, etc. They are the same loops used by aerial performers, which by the way use them with no safety. I'm not recommending this, but that's how they use them.
It comes with a leather cinch and when applied correctly is virtually impossible to come out of on accident. Just three days ago in northern Florida, we hung Kristen for her aerial stunt as publicity for the next evening's show. She is completely confident with them. I don't have the guy's name in Ohio in front of me. I would suggest calling Cannon's Great Escapes. Mark can point you in the right direction. Kevin P.S. I see you are in Indiana. We are based out of Indiana as well.

I have always used car seat belts or pre stressed webbing which is certificated at over a ton stress.
Used rope once,,never again,,,knots slipped and got nasty rope burns. If you use webbing made into two long loops you can have one on each leg (Loop through loop) This gives a fast link up and release,,also pad the inside with blanket material. Best way to describe the loop set up is look at the old rope, wand and rings trick,,the position of the wand is where your leg requires to be ok. Ken |

Using loop through loop, wouldn't your leg come out easily while you're struggling to do your escape? Right when slack is applied to it, won't the loop loosen up?

For what its worth-I have found a rigging that works very very well and releases simply. Like the others above the simplest is the best. I use on each ankle a length of flat web tubbing its rated at about 4000 pounds. Each is tied into an endless loop. One end terminates (should I say terminate about this?)to an aluminum mountain climbing figure 8 hooks. The other end (around your ankle) is just a slip loop, I think they are called calf knots, either way simple, direct, no complications. I like it better than padded rope as it is more comfortable and the extra width allows more weight distributed better, also at times I will wrap an ace bandage below the pants for extra padding
hope this helps

I wish I could see what you're talking about when you say endless loop. I understand loop through loop. All the other terms you use are ???? Can you email me a picture of what you mean?
