Back in the 1980s, British magician Mark Leveridge put out a small stapled booklet called The Commercial Sponge Ball Routine. Nothing fancy in there, just a bare bones in the spectator's hands type of routine we all know. But it's a worker. I believe Mark's routine is in the World's Greatest Magic Sponge Balls DVD.
Garcia's Encyclopedia is worth getting. The amount of information it contains is valuable for anyone interested in sponge work, and reading his prose is always a joy. |

Pete already answered this, but I think it's important to emphasize here that a knowledge of magic history really comes in handy.
Laurie Ireland was Frances Ireland Marshall's first husband. He was the designer of the Ireland cups, as well as the author of several books on card magic, card cheating and of course, his book on cups and balls. Quote: On Nov 18, 2015, Nosslrak wrote:

IMO, anything "encyclopedic" has extremely poor bang for the buck.
When anyone asks me what to get on spongeballs I tell them: Get Patrick Page's DVD - Great, practical, dirt cheap Read Carney's 2 ball routine in Carneycopia - awesome book everyone should own and DON'T get the Nozebleeda DVD "the last word on sponge balls" - it's a joke.

I got the encyclopedia when it was a sensible price some decades ago. It is excellent. I just wish Frank Garcia was a better writer. Still, the material is excellent and I got a lot out of it. But yes, there are many sources on sponge ball magic. As mentioned I think the Ken Brooke routine, particularly the patter is excellent. And what does not seem to be mentioned in the sources above is that there is an excellent section on sponge balls in one of Routined Manipulation books by Lewis Ganson.

The Encyclopedia of Sponge Balls was a later work and Schindler may not have been working with Garcia by then. By the way, there is a correct way to hold the purse frame in your fist before producing sponges or anything else. I've only seen it explained in the Roger Klause In Concert book and Roberto Giobbi's Secret Agenda. |
