Hello !
I am a university student who started doing magic a few months ago. I just did my first stage show (a two hours one man show) and it went reasonably well. I am wondering now if it is something I want to keep as a hobbit or if I really want to go for it. I love you all and I LOVE KOALAS. |

Welcome to the Café!
? You just started doing magic a few months ago and you have enough material, skill, knowledge and talent to do two hours?!!! WOW!? |

Well... I had a certain interest that lasted for 1 year or 2 when I was younger. But I had given up since.
I got lucky for the material. Our art center wanted a local magician to perform and they gave me important subsidies to buy stuff if I accepted not to be paid. The last month have been lots of practice but it worked reasonably well. Many tricks are fairly easy once you have the props (ie multiplying bottles, razor blades, etc...). As for skills, well... with only a few weeks of practices you can learn some very nice basic tricks like multiplying balls or string magic. And really, a two hour kid's show, once you removed the jokes, is not composed of thousand of tricks . Stage is definitely fun. Our neighbor-town want me to redo the same show in a few weeks and I am kind of interested. thanks for the comment. |

So, you do Razor Blades for kids?
|

Well.. yes.
I LOVE kids and I use to do lots of animation... So, basically, what I did was a fun show with pieces of magic. I would not dare to call myself a magician after only a few months of practice... Eating razor blades, if presented in a funny way, can be really entertaining for kids. I love the mix of jokes and scary parts and I think most children do too. I must also say that I LOVE YOU ALL. May happiness be in your hearts forever. |

Love and responsibility are two diferent things.
You need to learn the difference. |

I don't know...
Do you think razor blades should not be done in front of children ? I always though children were way brighter and more careful than most people think. Beside, It is not like if children had access to razor blades now. Most don't even know what it is. I admit I hesitated a bit before presenting this to a crowd of children. There was also a part of the act in which I put my arm on fire and let it burn for 2 minutes. I was really hesitant about those two, so I asked a bunch of parents what they thought before the show. They were parents of children ranging from 4 to 10. They all told me it was great. Of course, it is the kind of number where you have to issue a warning and make sure they understand it is not to try at home. Maybe I was wrong but I am under the impression that, if presented in a way that makes clear that you need to be a professional to try, it is not a problem to do that kind of thing in front of children... Would you suggest no doing it again ? |

Two hour show for kids....eating razor blades......and two minutes of yourself on fire.....April Fools Day is still a few weeks away.....are you just warming up to see how big of a story we'll believe?? If it is indeed a factual representation of your inagural act....I'm guessing you're not from around these parts (USA).....are ya'?

Not from USA, indeed... Canada, not that far hey ?
And no, it is not a joke... Is it really that hard to believe ? The fire and razor blades were the only two parts that might have been unappropriated and, as I said, I performed it to parents before and they told me to go for it... Was it really a bad idea ? The rest was really classical stuff for a kid show. As for the length, it was 1:45. So, not exactly 2 hours. I was aiming for 1:30 and I realized that, with the talking, things were longer than I expected. I canceled two numbers in the first half when I realized it was going to be too long but I still busted by 15 minutes. |

When playing to a kids audience, telling them not to try this at home is like saying "Watch this....it's really cool...in fact, try this yourself at home, but only when mom and dad aren't around to catch you doing it". I'm glad things turned out allright for you and that the parents and clients were pleased.....I simply can't imagine doing those effects for a kids audience.
My guess is that since this was your first performance, you probably didn't (and still don't) have any performers insurance coverage. Things can go wrong with even the simplest of effects, not to mention fire. We've all seen the news stories of nightclubs being burned to the ground (and people being killed as a result) because of an errant special effect from a well meaning band. I don't know the legal workings in Canada, but I'd be worried as hell to do something like that in the US, not only from a liability standpoint, but from a moral perspective as well. I might do a fire wallet, flaming book or other short lived fire effect under the right circumstances, but set an arm on fire for 2 minutes?? Sorry, I just can't imagine doing that under any kid-show circumstance. Full professional stage shows typically last around 75 minutes, for a variety of reasons. I've done lots of kid shows, and keeping their attention for more than 50-60 minutes is a daunting task. On the occasion where I'm asked to do more than an hour, I typically try to get the sponsor to allow me a 60 minute show and then a "magic class" for the additional time. That has worked well for me, but more than an hour show.....for kids from 4 to 10 years old.....WOW.....I applaud your success and would suggest that you should stop wondering and go for it. Apparently you have the talents and skills (read: gift) necessary to be a good performer. Go for it! |
