I just read the through the MySpace.com topic that was discussed last year. While I agree it has become a huge success, I’ve always thought having and advertising on my own MySpace would do more harm than good. I’m referring to the reputation of MySpace having adult stalkers, young kids saying their 14 when they are not, etc. I certainly don’t want to be associated with that kind of activity.
Do you agree, or is it time to get with the new generation and get a MySpace? I know it's free, but so are a lot of things that aren’t good for you.

As a card carrying member of the new generation I would say definitely get a MySpace. That way, you can have a place for fans and repeat customers (if you perform at restaurants) to find you and easily keep track of performances dates. You can also post videos for free, which is a nice perk. All in all, I would say that MySpace is a great way for performers to stay actively in touch with fans.

Ken, good question.
Sometimes I have heard clients asking for a YouTube video link or MySpace in addition to one's personal website. It seems to be the in thing. Plus, most people know the feel and look of those popular sites, therefore making it easy for one to navigate through such verses a personal website.

Personally, I don't like MySpace as a representation of me. I really don't like the ads, and I find the general layout to be poor, sometimes really ugly.
I would build a website based on a blog or other simple CMS (Content Management System) which will allow you to update your site by yourself. I personally like WordPress. You can add a calendar of events for the things you think are important, and if your fans know about RSS, they will automatically be notified of changes in your site. If you can't do the technical stuff yourself, hire a web designer to set it up for you. Until you have a really large fan base, you can get web hosting for $15 a month or less. Register your own domain name for less than $20 a year, and you will be all set.

There are just as many people who are in their 40+ age bracket that have a MySpace as those under 25+.
It's not going to hurt. I've had mine for 4 years. It's helped; I wouldn't say it hurt. But, I do think MySpace has peaked.

I believe the peak has hit, as well.
I also do not like the way it looks, and it is not a way I wish to represent myself and what it is I do. I think it is a personal thing, though.

I don't need to know if you get motion sickness. I find Facebook to be in a similar vein. |

Sometimes, the plainer the better. I've kept mine plain a long time. It was a nice way to connect with new listeners and sell merchandise.
Overall, I'm liking SoundClick now; more options and not so slow on the dial. Especially with the amount of bandwidth MySpace must use!

All true, but on the other hand, while it might not be for everybody, there is no shortage of locally and nationally known magicians that have a MySpace page. So, what's it going to hurt? (Even a bunch of the Buskers have their own page.) I'm very often surprised when I come across a MySpace for one of the big name performers. Just as an example, some of them that I've come across include The Amazing Johnathan, Doc Eason, The Pendragons, Whit Haydn, Michael Finney, Copperfield, Chris Angel, Murray, Dana Daniels, and on and on it goes......
Personally, I wouldn't use a MySpace for the main source of advertising my shows, but it seems to serve some other connectedness purpose. But, as stated previously, it's probably becoming passe'. |

Depends what you're looking for and if you know how to use it. A couple of good videos on MySpace or YouTube, a fancy layout and some funky pictures, and you begin to get noticed, access to millions of potential fans. Notice to get may or may not happen, and this notice isn't going to get you a lot of corporate and kids parties, but it could also lead to so much more.

What do you want out of your web page? If it is to share some things and to talk about yourself, then use MySpace or Facebook, or any of the other places that are primarily interested in building communities.
However, if you want to sell yourself or your services, you will be better served by spending a little money and getting a web designer to build something that will do a great job of selling you. Remember that you will only have so much time and energy that you will want to expend on something like a website. Do what you do best, and let others do the other things.

Social networking is what it is, reaching out to new people.
It's great to get a newer audience. But if you don't get them on your email list, or they don't buy your product and the site goes bye-bye...it's not at all worthwhile investing a lot of time in it. I mean, I finally logged into my account...I hadn't since 1/1; that's 55 days people. That's how on top of the list it is for me.

Also, it really wouldn't look good for me to list my upcoming performances on a site like this, since the overwhelming majority of them are private, unless they would book me because they felt sorry for me. Thank you all for your input.

I am on MySpace in the Comedians section. You can be very selective as to who you have as friends and whether they leave comments or not.
I use it as networking and to stay in touch with other performers. I don't ever think of it as a place to get work.

Unfortunately, Myspace is on its way out. The popularity has faded. Everyone I know is on facebook now (I am not), but I'd recommend investing your time in promoting your own web site rather than working on any sort of personal page.

After 2 separate occasions of having someone make a fake, (and very mean) myspace page for me, I recently caved and made one. It's actually only for real friends. I don't use it to look for work, or promote my magic. That's what my professional website and blog are for.
