What kind of cardio do you do, Don? Do you wear a heart rate monitor?

Justin: I work out for an hour and a half 5 to 6 days a week. I enjoy spin, elipitical, and jogging on the tredmill. I also like the Freemotion weights. After I lost all my weight, I needed to tone and doing this has really helped. I always tell people that the hardest part about working out is taking the time to do it. To start off I would recommend a personal trainer to give you direction and motivation. Even if you could only afford a couple of times with him/her, they will set up a exercise program for you. Good luck!

I work out regulary and have always been in good shape. I can still do a 1 1/2 forward somersault off a 1 meter diving board. I used to lift weights and was big back in the day. Then I found the bicycle at age 29 and it totally changed my life. I can ride 100 miles in under 5 hours and have ridden 255 miles in one day (New Jersey's longest day.It took 17 hrs on the bike.)I ride all year long in all kinds of temps. The only time I don't go outside is if it's raining or snowing. I even ride to the office (19 miles 1 way, 38 round trip) I have a myspace page just for my cycling, you can check it out just by clicking on the link in my signiture, but I digres. These days I do a lot of yoga and pilatties and work on core strength. I jump rope and run a little. I am very active. I used to belong to a gym but now I just work out alone in solitary confinment. I ride in the basement by our storage bin. Nothing but concrete walls, no music, nothing but me, the rollers and my sweat dripping off me. Hard core. The thing I am trying to find out is calories burned in the heart rate zone. I know my high, low and resting heart rate, I just forgot how to figure out the exact formula that can calculate the numbers. What you are doing sounds great and I applaud you for making the commitment. I know what you mean when you say "making the time". Nothing feels better than when you don't feel like it, then have a conversation going on in your head about getting motivated, then draging yourself to work out. When you finish, it's one of the best feelings! Keep up the good work! And if you are ever in NYC, give me a shout, I'll take you for a spin around the city! Thanks - |

Silverking,
When I divorced my second wife, I lost another 187 lbs (and $75,000). I'me overweight, but I can't afford to lose anymore on the divorce diet... Dave

Justin--I looked it up in the book. It looks like there is not good way to figure it out via heart rate because that doesn't correlate to amount of energy expended. You can be at a certain heart rate and be putting out more energy (and burning more calories) than me at the same heart rate.
Have you ever gone to one of the exercise machines at a gym or hotel fitness room that tell you how many watts of power you're putting out when you are in your target zone? That would let us do a calculation. Now, aside from your calorie expenditure question--HOLY COW! 255 miles in one day! I'm still working up to a century. This winter I now have a Cycle-Ops fluid trainer that I've been using, so instead a decline in performace by spring, I'm hoping to be stronger than ever. How do you like the rollers? I've never tried them--just my rear wheel trainer. |

We met up, crashed at the hotel and then drove back home the next day. Those machines at the gym are not accurate, they can be off by as much as 30%. I use rollers only and would never use anything else. They will improve so many areas of your cycling, you can't imagine. it takes a little time to get used to them but once you do, I don't think you'll ever go back. Same thing with clipless pedals. The benifit is tremendous. If you are ever in the area, give me a call, I'll take you out for a spin. We can climb some hills or just spin around the city... Thanks! |

Justin--
Regarding estimating calories--Yeah, I know the gym machines aren't too accurate, but is is probably better than just guessing. ...or we can TRY to estimate using data from an outdoor trial, but it is so hard to accurately estimate your aerodynamic losses that the gym machine trial would be more accurate. The best bet would be to find someone with one of those cool hubs (or chain setups) the pros use that measure your power output accurately. Once we know power and amount of time we can calculate calories. (There are also stationary indoor machines available that are very accurate, but as you said, the average gym machine isn't well-calibrated). Regarding your training on rollers--Moving up to rollers is as beneficial as going to clipless pedal. Dang! If that's the case, I've got to try them out! Thanks! Regarding biking in NY--you bet. If I find my way out there I'll be SURE to look you up. I hope you don't smoke me too bad! I'm still marvelling over the >250 mile ride. Do you have to do any special prep for that day (special training/loading up on carbs the day before/etc.) or are you able to just tough out something like that when needed? |

I ride with a bunch of animals...lol All they want to do is climb hills, hills and more hills. A century won't make them happy if there are not any hills involved. Ridding on the flats is almost sac-religious. That summer (well the whole year, actually) we all had over 10,000 miles loged. One dude had more than 15,000... We would often do 2 centuries per weekend and then durring the week some small rides, 40 - 60 miles, after work and before it got dark. But then even if we rode in the dark, we all had "night" bikes loaded with hi-tek lights. I even had a club called the "back by midnight" gang! But the main thing was to load up on carbs a few days before. Then on ride day we all had a big breakfast, ate the whole way and drank a couple gallons of water throughout the 17 hours on the bike. By the end we were all spent, some of us had tears in our eyes, I don't know if it was from pain or joy? -lol After that we rode RAGBRAI and it was only 750 miles for the whole week. The one good day was when the ride was 150 miles. We did it in 6 1/2 hrs. (after that ride I was then emcee for the show. I had to be on the stage by 2:PM and emcee til 6:pm) We made to the camp site by 1:45 and I didn't even have time to find our truck or change into any street clothes. I emceed the whole show in my bike clothes (oh, and it was blazing hot with NO SHADE). Ah, the fun you can have |

Justin,
I didn't know you were such a cyclist. I raced semi-pro in Belgium for two years with Eddy Planckaert's team. We would ride 40km to the race, race for 120km (at an everage HR of 175) and then ride home. 3 times a week, lol. Crazy times... As for your Roller question (we used to do three hours on them when it was too rainy in Vancouver), as long as your HR is up, then you'll burn calories. You won't do much for strength, however. I suggest a Cyclops trainer as you can get the best of both worlds. My 2 cents, jdg

Hey Jamie, Thanks for the cyclops tip. some of the guys I ride with do and they tell me the same thing...lol.
Wow, so you're from the Cannibal's area! Eddie Merckx, the ultimate animal! What's he up to these days? I heard he owned a bar or a pub or something? It would be an honor to ride with anyone from Belgium! when you visit NYC, give me a call, I'll take you for a spin around the city. Justin |
