I have always really like Rachael Pollack on the Tarot:
The Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom (originally 2 volumes, now a trade paperback) Tarot: The Open Labyrinth She has some newer Tarot books out that I haven't read. You can't beat these. Yours, Paul |

Cool, thanks, mota - that makes me feel good!
Another author I thought looked good (but I haven't bought her book yet) is Joan Bunning; her book(s) do look good, however. Think finding a good book on Tarot is hard? Try finding a good solid book on the Runes! That is, one that isn't full of made-up crap and fluffy imaginative interpretations added by the author! (Actually, I did find a few good books, but that's off topic - if anyone wants to know which books I'd recommend, PM me).
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

The introductory tarot book I recommend is Robert M. Place's The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination, which starts with a concise history of the tarot drawing on Ronald Decker and Michael Dummett's work. Here he occasionally makes his Neoplatonic interpretations sound more factual than he probably should, but it's still a very fair summary. Discussions of the cards of the Marseille and Waite-Smith tarots follow, then his personal reading method.
You would supplement this book with others that focus on reading, from whatever perspective, but it's worthwhile to have a grounding understanding of the history both for readings and other presentations. |

A little off topic, but I wanna share! Lately I've been experimenting with a stacked tarot deck with an index of short cards running thru-out so I can modify readings circumstantially and on the fly. It's kinda exciting!

Maybe it's not really off topic.
There are, IMO, at least three kinds of readings. Trick Readings Psychological Readings Supernatural Readings The latter I don't believe in (unfortunately). The second I find uninteresting altogether. Which means that for me the most interesting readings are the first, pretending to be the last. The problem is that most here on the Café don't want any specs (or customers) to confuse number one with number three. So they do the middle. The middle leaves me cold. I'd rather do a good show--and everyone know it was a show--or become a charlatan and score money and babes and play with people's lives--than do number two and interpret the cards as touchy-feely windows to the soul for self-reflection and self-improvement. Give me Nostradamus or give me Houdini, but leave Oprah Winfrey out of it. I wonder what Eckhard Tolle thinks of the Tarot? Now...no reason to flame me, folks. I'm justing putting my opinion here because I belong to the Café and happened to stop by for the evening. I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes or tell them how to do their jobs. I love everyone here in the spooky forum. Truly, I do. Jeff |

Jeff:
No flame here, but I'd like to add 3 more categories: Systematic, utilizing a system for the reading Intuition, using what you feel the meaning of the card is based of your intuition. Combination, a method of conducting the reading using two or more of the methods mentioned. Personally, I use a systematic approach, but allow intuition to guide me on some of the meaning and interpretations. Tony |
