Wayne,
Thanks for stopping in. Do you think, as a creator, that you tend to create products for the market more than effects that you enjoy doing? It seems like there is a certain niche to product releasing where you might have to sacrifice some of your favorites in order to hit a wider market. I am just getting into the product release scene, so if you have any advice for a n00b like myself, please let me hear it. Also, I remember awhile back on your website a reference for a book you were doing. Is that still in the works? Thanks Donny |

Greetings!
The only time I've ever sat down & created an effect for the market was with the Ultragaff project that I worked on with Danny Garcia. I create largely for myself. The effects that I have released to the community (Sinful, Indecent, Stigmata, & Control) I have been using in my stand-up & walk around performances for at least 5 years - several of those effects I have been performing for almost 10 years! Regarding "Sacrificing some of my favorites in order to hit a wider market" ... sure. I can understand that. I have many effects that some people have begged me to release - however - they're impractical for the general market. One of the things you learn as a worker is that you can almost, literally, get away with ANYTHING in front of an audience. All you need to create a miracle is confidence & ONE good moment of misdirection. Once you embrace this, the doors open wide for what you can accomplish in front of a lay audience. However... these same rules don't always apply to the magic market. Unfortunately the majority of magician's within the magic market are NOT interested in how an effect will play to a LAY audience. The magicians within the market are interested in what will fool THEM. The same rules do not apply. Paul Harris told me the story of a magician who would have a card selected. As the card was being shown around to the group - this magician would place the deck back in it's box & place the box on the table. He would then pretend like he still had the deck in his hands. He would "replace" the selected card back into the "deck" - & then reveal that the deck had vanished, leaving only the selected card... where is was the deck? On the table in it's box. A true MIRACLE to lay audiences, but try to sell this to the magic community... It's strange, doesn't always make sense, but the rules ARE very different. There are many things that need to be taken into account before deciding to release an effect to the magic community. W:H WAYNE HOUCHIN |
