Thanks again to Hoppini and also to Hansel and Potty the pirate whose fascinating and penetrative comments I've followed in the Café. Sometimes my talking speed may be perceived as 'rapid fire' but its the way I've been performing for many years and it doesn't seem to cause any problems for kids - the ones in the video were only 4-5 mainly and there were some who couldn't ven speak English, but had a wild time!
Actually not all routines are so fast, but my opening tends to be quick and to the point...which works great for my audiences here in Hong Kong. I'll try to post my other routines like Fraidy Cat Rabbit, the Rings as well as some Birthday Kid routines for your analyis. Thanks a million to all of you! |

That was a great show. I was smiling as I watched it as well. I'll be putting on my first real Kids Show at the end of April, I'll make sure I film it and post it for review.
Keep up the great work!

Thanks for your kind and encouraging comment John! Good luck in your show - just go out there and have fun with the kids! I'll return the favour and give your future video an honest review!

Very nice handling of the septer and the kids. Lets face it, it is about the entertainment, and they were having a ball. Good job. I look forward to seeing more.

Great bit - and it was obvious that the kid's were rolling with laughter - which is the purpose of the routine. I, for one, don't feel that you were talking or going too fast . . . it was F U N from start to finish!

That was a great video. I had to laugh, because that's pretty much the same routine that I use with the kids.
I absolutely love this item. I haven't gotten the knack of fixing them yet, so I am continually buying new ones (I usually buy three at a time, that's how much I go through them because of the elastic). I was doing a birthday party several weeks ago for a three year old girl. Before the show started, that little girl became so shy that she wouldn't come out of her room. Her mom spent about 15 minutes trying to coax her out, to no avail. Mom told me to go ahead and do the show without her. I asked if it would be ok if I gave it a shot. So both the mom and I went to see the little girl. I explained to her that since she didn't want to come out to see the magic, I wanted to bring a little bit of magic to her. I then did my routine with the Silver Scepter. Within three minutes she was cracking up laughing, and ready to come out and join her friends. Mom was amazed at my skill -- I was amazed at the Silver Scepter's power! Brian |

Thanks to Eric, MagicB1S,Bill Scott and Brian Lehr for their feedback and comments. yes, the routine may not be very original but the children's reactions are priceless. To me I believe that if you can get continuous laughter its always a sign of success with kids. Of course the magical element has to be solid too!
Brian, I'm not surprised that the Silver Sceptre helped that little girl get over her initial reluctance. I dodnt know if I would approach her one-on-one to perform but what I've found is that kids like that will edge closer and closer to watch and participate - at their own pace...That's why I place a fun trick like that at the beginning of the show! |

I have heard that the new 'professional' version by Practical MAgic is well worth the money as it makes changing of the elastic very easy. But to me, the original does the job fine! |

Hey Bern... we were talking about you at lunch today. A few of us get together every Friday for lunch and one of the topics was your video. Some were saying that you made them pull out their silver scepter and put it back in their show. On magician even did it for a show before he got there. He got the same reaction that you do. I think he will post thanking you
Great job. This is what these forums are all about.... sharing and to inspire. Thanks! B-Rad

HI Bradley,
Thanks so much for this story! To be able to remind my peers of the effectiveness of a trick they may have put aside for a while is very pleasing indeed! Thanks to your group for taking the time to view and try out this routine - and make many kids laugh and have a great time! I think this is why most of us take up magic - to be able to create laughter in another individual is a special gift indeed. Your post really made my day! |

Bern,
Great reactions. You're fun to watch. The only slight criticism I have is that you were working the kids up to a frenzy, and then the wand hit you in the cheek and the laughter was a little reduced. I think some of the kids were unsure of the appropriateness of laughing. When it went up your nose, the slapstick nature became more obvious. I strongly believe that if you omitted the first time it hit you, and went straight for the nose, you would have pushed them over the edge. The way I see it, is to handle the first part like you did. Admonish the wand and tell it to behave, it does. Than while apologizing and promising it will never happen again, have the wand quickly go up your nose, cutting you off in mid sentence*. Explain that the wand obviously wants attention so "Let's use him in a trick....". The wand stands up to authority, and you look out for his needs. Everyone wins. After a trick involving the wand is done, when you go to put him away finally, you can watch to see if he's satisfied after performing. After seeing that he is happy and done (and not jumping out of his sleeve), the kids can give him a round of applause. I'm being overly analytical, and it would have never occurred to me if I'd seen you live. I'm just trying brainstorm with what I see as a very worthy cause. I have no criticism regarding your appearance, energy, or likability. Great job! *you'd have to practice this like it was a fine piece of sleight of hand. Right now it seems calculated and cautious.

I immediately say, in a comical way, "Hey, don't laugh at that! He hurted [yup, hurted] me!" That gets another laugh. Then I allow the wand to hit me in the neck; this time the kids go wild, especially when I say, "Stop laughing; that's not funny!" It's all a matter of how you play it out. Brian |

I really appreciated the video. Nothing like the sound of those kids "cracking" up. I am now shopping for a Silver Sceptre for my shows. Thank You.
