Look at Unconventional, By Christopher Taylor. There is a fine piece of bizarre magic using runes and smoke from the fingertips.

We sell hells Smoke, and I personally have used it in the past.
For those asking about the toxic nature of it... It is VERY important you wash your hands quickly. It can be absorbed via the skin. You also do not want to breathe the fumes while preparing it. VERY toxic. With that said.. in SMALL amounts its ok on an occasional basis. This is not something I would want to use in a regular act due to the byproducts it produces. One thing I have noticed with magic... it seems to escape the hazzardous material regulation that other industries face. I have seen many effects where very dangerous and toxic materials are shipped freely in boxes unregulated, and the end user unaware of even what they are exposed to. Hells Smoke is a toxic chemical combination, but when used in reasonable amounts and proper preparation, it is safe. Just don't do what I did the first time I ever prepared it... in my kitchen, dead of winter... all windows closed... prepared an entire PACKAGE of it... Smoke alarms went off... Carbon Monxoide detectors went off... smoke filled the house... my cats ran and hid.... opened the windows for several hours to get the fumes and smoke out... heating bill was quite high that month!!! But I had plenty of hells smoke ready! hahahah

I tried making my own one time from a matchbox, but it didn't work. I should try again, but now that I know it's potentially DEADLY I might try it somewhere other than our small unventilated bathroom.

Where can I research about the toxicity of the product? I would like to look into it. I have a friend that is a chemist, and a bunch of people in the medicine field. Maybe they can direct me to good sources. Does anyone know what chemicals are being used here, or where to look for information? Thank you.

Hi,
I've done a little research on the chemical produced in the preparation for the effect. I may be wrong in my conclusions and if so, can someone correct me on this please: 1) Safety match paper contains red phosphorous - not a real hazard to health (http://msds.chem.ox.ac.uk/PH/phosphorus_red.html) - as obviously it wouldn't be on the market. 2) Preparing the residue: Burning the paper in an (apparently) reduced oxygen environment (made by the tenting of the paper) - this produces phosphorous trioxide (I think). This is quite a nasty little substance according to http://cameochemicals.noaa.gov/chemical/4251 3) Usage: It's the reaction with water that creates the heat necessarily to create the smoke and melt the skin slightly. Don't breathe this in as it's going to give off possibly phosphine gas (highly toxic - http://encyclopedia.airliquide.com/sds/en/100_AL_EN.pdf) but also create phosphoric acid on the skin (this stuff is in cola so don't freak out by the acid part). Given the fact that you're only using a tiny amount of this stuff and ensuring you wash your hands asap afterwards (obviously as part of the routine), I wouldn't worry about it as long as you're not constantly sniffing the stuff (during or after prep). Anything in excess becomes a poison to the human body. The reason why I think it loses its efficacy over time is that the white phosphorous converts into less dangerous red phosphorous which is of no use in step 3. Hope this helps. I'll still be using the stuff, but will be more cautious with its preparation and open the windows / doors. If anyone knows anything different / more detail on this stuff, please can they post it here so we can be more informed about our decision to use this effect? Cheers, Matt |

I have used Smokey Magic by Trevor Duffy for a few years now, it is easilly hooked up and you are set for the night with lots of smoke from your hands with out the toxicity of Hell's smoke.

Tonny, about the set-up for the Smokey Magic. Smoke 2000 needed to use plastic rings and pins in three different places inside the jacket to keep the gimmick in place. Is that the same for Smokey Magic? It used to take me quite a bit to get the set-up in the right place. Was there a set-up improvement on this one? It is the practicality that I like about the Hell's smoke. If you keep it in your wallet you're ready to go for semi-impromptu magic (you just need to go outside and put the paste on your belt buckle). Maybe we can say that, for an event, or a table hopping setting Duffy's Smokey Magic is better. I should probably get it for events and such. Also, How thick is the smoke? Does it work well in a well lit environment? Hell's smoke is ok, but not great.

Just to add a bit to the conversation:
Altoids makes a breath "strip" that comes in a small metal tin with a sliding lid. I prepare small amounts of the stuff in the tin itself. It's very easy to open the tin, apply the stuff and close the tin with one hand in a jacket pocket. Turns out, the tin sticks to a magnet, too, if you're interested in a feature like that. Hmmm. . . The thing with Hell's Smoke/Lil' Smoke/the homemade kind, is that it's subtle. If you want a big puff of smoke you're better off going with something else, but for a hint of smoke to "bump" an effect into the mysterious zone, something like what is under discussion can't be beat. I find it more useful as an addition to other effects than as an effect on it's own. It works well with the appearance or vanish of coins, for instance. As for the toxicity issue, I've been using this stuff for years with no ill effects to any of my three hands. I did breathe the fumes once by accident. I haven't seen things like that since my undergraduate days at Albert Hoffman U. Man, I miss those days in Prof. Owlsley's class. Seriously, don't breathe the fumes and wash your hands after you use it, but otherwise you should be okay.

PepeRuizSJ,
Smokey magic, can be set up very quickly as it straps to the inside of your upper arm /armpit area with a velcro holder / holster setup that is included. Once setup you are good for the evening. The smoke is identical to cigarette smoke, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Very visible. You can also control how much smoke is produced, very little or a big blast! You do need to wear this under a jacket or shirt with long sleeves. Hope this helps! Tony

Thank you Tony. It sounds like the velcro holder makes it a bit quicker to set up than UltraSmoke, and if the smoke is similar to a cigarette's smoke, then I'm sold. I'll start saving for it. Thanks.

Hello to all of you,
First of all, thank you for those using Hell's Smoke by Panda Magic As you can see, I am the producer of this effect and this is the reason of my post here. I have read your messages with attention and it seems that some of you are concerned by a potential health issue while using this product. Be sure that Hell's Smoke is absolutely not dangerous to your health as long as you respect the instructions. Basically, do not inhale the smoke while preparing the effect (the smoke at fingertips is harmless though, even if it's never recommended to inhale smoke). It is absolutely ok to have some on your fingers, even for a long time, as long as you do not put your fingers in your eyes, mouth, nose or in somebody else's. The reason we recommend washing your hands asap is to avoid this kind of problem. I presented this effect in many conventions and I can tell you that if I had to wash my hands each time I presented it I would have spent more time in the restroom than actually presenting it Well, this said, it is better to be more cautious than not enough. Another precision, I read sometimes than this is the same effect than using the matches. This is not completely true. Even though you actually might get a little smoke using the matches you get much more advantages using Hell's Smoke. The first one is it's ready to use. The second one is you will get much more smoke than just out of some matches. The third one is IT IS NOT CANCEROUS. Using the matches phosphorous is cancerous and it must not enter in contact with the skin. You can for sure save a little money now but think about it when you'll have to fight cancer in 20 years. To finish I'll wish you a wonderful year 2009, hope it will be very magical for all of you. |

I will bet my life it's not as "toxic" and "health hazardous" as a Big Mac or T-bone steak.
Moderation folks, and I love IT!!! subtle "bump" is GREAT, over doing it kinda ruins it (a little bit is sometimes MORE!) plus the HUGE advantage of not having to be rigged, and once you are prepared, it looks "impromptu". I have a small "wrigley's eclipse" tin, easy to "pocket open" and easy access for my "index", works like a charm!
Double posters should be shot!
No really!! |
