Hi,
Having strolled through the forum to try and turn something up on this subject, I haven't found anything on this subject - yet... Almost all illusions we do are visual.... I was wondering if there are any illusions or atmosphere setters we can do that use the other senses - eg: Smell (using oils like vetiver which makes things smell old and musty) Auditory (infrasound - to heighten emotions as per large cathedral organ pipes which can't be heard) Touch - old antique items (or replicas) I just want to enhance the mood of an evening's intimate show by taking a holistic approach to the whole event. Any ideas / things you've tried and worked (or not worked)? Cheers, Matt |

Touch - old antique items...this makes me think of the Outlaw Book Tests, which could also go with the smell. You bring out this old smelling, old looking, evil little book and let the spectator hold it in their hands...if they dare...

I have a whole e-article on adding scents to storytelling in The Wizards' Journal #9, called "Potpourri." You'll find a description HERE:
http://www.magicnook.com/wizJ07/wj0710.htm The emphasis is on delivering different scents at specific times during the storytelling (or seance, if you choose to use it that way). Imagine that you channel the ghost of some evil person and a musky swamp smell fills the room (lightly, not enough to chase everyone out!). Then you next channel a sweet young thing and her perfume fills the air.

Absolutely!
I use several essential oils and "hunting" scents for a number of my items from my Western seance. I have items that are leather and coins, supposed to have been buried for a number of years in a wooden box. My test audience did pick up and examine closely, and sniffed the items as well. I know we have talked in here in the past about involvement of as many senses as possible in effects for maximum response form the participants. kay

There is a wonderful company out of Chicago called Sinister Scents. They were at the haunt tradeshow and they make wonderfully evil scents that have a wide variety of uses. Google them.

Baba's book has an effect (Parfume de Erzulie) that involved different people detecting different scents from the same bottle.
What is the color of magic?

Turn the Air conditioning up - hot - at the venue so people get used to being a little warm, then as you start the act, get someone turn it down so its cold, oh so cold. Maybe have some ice buckets hidden around the room to add to the chill factor.

Thanks guys - lots to look at here. Knepper has a book that I may take a look at http://www.magicproshop.com/secret-scent......401.html which deals with scents. Has anyone got this and is it worth getting?
Not a lot on the use of infrasound though - any ideas? I've a friend who's a sound engineer so should be able to knock together some stuff. I've a subwoofer which can kick out down to 10Hz. I'll have a look around to see any medical side-effects (or intended effects) to see if it's too risky to use. Though, UK Living TV's (or should that be Dead TV judging by the content of most of the programmes?) Most Haunted's parapsychologist Ciaran o'Keefe is also a sound engineer being used to install infrasound in an Edinburgh haunted attraction, so should be OK. http://www.paranormalwatch.com/2007/04/0......untings/ Cheers, Matt |

Sight sound touch smell taste is the only one I haven't found a way to exploit in my shows lol

Walt Anthony, the OTHER Spellbinder, thought I should mention my Seven Sided Herbal Tea Chest (from The Wizards' Journal #16 on my site), which involves both the sense of smell (you pass around seven or more fragrant herbal teas to be sniffed) and the sense of taste (you pour seven or more cups of hot tea matching the herbs you showed earlier although they are all poured from the same tea kettle). Since the original request was for (I thought) things used during a seance, I didn't think it was appropriate. The Herbal Tea Chest, however, would be good in a pre-seance setting, to offer patrons a soothing cup of tea before beginning the really spooky stuff. The fact that your tea chest can never seem to be emptied of tea AND holds a tea kettle filled with steaming hot water AND holds all the tea cups as well makes it just a bit bizarre. If it's OK to mix magick with seancing, then it might work for you.
