What can anyone tell me about this print? Artist? Title? Any printers still printing it up? One of my favorites and I would love to own a nice print of it.

I would say Bill Palmer would probably know. As for a print, you might check with Norm Nielsen. I've never seen that before but I love it.

I came across the same image online; just don't remember what website it was on.
It's also one of my favorites.

Looks like a Daumier to me but not sure.

I agree with Fortasse. It looks to be a lithograph of Honore Daumier. I suggest you Google Daumier. There are websites that list and have images of all his known works. I would warn you that it may take a while - he did over 4000 lithographs alone. This is not his only one with the cups and balls.

Hi Everyone, thanks for your input. You have given me a few places to check. Pete, yes I could, but I would like something a little better in quality and maybe a bit larger. I might just drop it in a projector and sketch it out myself if all else fails.

I remembered this was in Bob Reed's lecture so I rewatched it. He says it is from an artist named (something that sounds like) "Gavarney"? Any ideas on the proper spelling on that? A google search didn't turn up anything similar.
Incidentally he also said (at the time of filming) that the French Convention had just given away 1000 prints of this picture a week earlier! So perhaps I can find a spare. -todd

Todd : the artist is Paul Gavarni (1804-1866). The print is called "Masques et Visages" and dates back to 1853. The source for this information is Bob Read's treatise "The Cups & Balls in 19th Century Graphic Art". The print in question appears as illustration # 38 (although a very poor copy as indeed most of the prints are in this work, being for the most part photocopies of photocopies).

Sean, thank you kindly! Masques et Visages actually looks to be the name of the collection of prints this particular drawing was included in.

Todd : yes, you're right, it's the title of the series.

Thanks for the information fortasse. Here are a few more of Gavarni's works. The image posted at the top of this thread is better than most I've seen online.

Thanks so much mr. muggle! I was able to finagle a high quality scan out of their flash viewer code.
