Hi, guys, I am going to get my photos taken (in a studio) for my promotional packages (poster, website, etc) Any last-minute tips? Any poses suggested? What's your favorite pose? And what props do you recommend?
thanks! Ray |

Make sure your photo DEFINES Magic. If I'm looking at your photo w/o any words on it (The Magic of Sim Sala Bim), will I know you're a Magician or will I think you're an ad for The Gap? Think about it...

Don't limit yourself to the magic you actually do. For example, maybe you don't have fire shoot out from your jumbo coin, but it would look great in a picture. After all, your coin magic is hot, right? Let your imagination run wild and write down your ideas to discuss with the photographer.

A few deck spreads, a top hat with a fake bunny in it, a table with some well polished chrome cups. . . What do you have man?
Think inside the box. . . it's less crowded.

Also...when you say you're going to a STUDIO, that could mean anything. I hope your going to an actual stuido of a real photographer and not a Sears or JC Penny Portrait Studio. I know this is obvious, but these day....I dunno???

I prefeer Photos with Something strange or suggestive than photos with an Square Circle, change bag or run rabbit run. If you have a "TradeMark" Animal a Photo with him/her sells very well!A friend of mine use a sand clock, maybe a tarot card...Matter of taste, but I like photos "without" Magic Props...(Cards Fans not included)
Thanks, Hansel!

If you can get a picture like Johnny Ace Palmer's, that's great.
I, for one, would avoid the clichés: card fans, magic wand, rabbits in hats. But that's just me. |

I just went through this process a couple of weeks ago with a professional photographer. They were very careful to interview me (several emails before I showed up and a half hour talking in the studio before they started shooting) about what I was trying to convey, and where I would be conveying that message. They wanted to consider things like was it for a web page, business card, a one-sheet, a mailer - what and where were the photos going to be used. A head shot for auditions is treated different than photos you might want to use on a web page or post cards, so do yourself a favor and think carefully about where you will use them. They even suggested several clothing changes and some ideas with props.
They also wanted me to think about character and how it will be precieved by my potential clients. They were really good about getting photos that conveyed character (that Johnny Ace Plamer photo is a great example). The results were great (way better than the ones I have) and will be going on the site I'm redesigning pretty quick. It just helps to know what you want, how it will be used, and what type of personality you want to convey. You get what you pay for. And I agree with S2000 - avoid shots like holding 4 balls between your fingers. Those type of poses don't mean anything to anybody expect magicians. Something orginial will help you stand out from the crowd. Think "Entertainment" and not just "Magic." |
