I just bought a trick called "Montezooma" by Stewart James. What's a nice way to say "What a piece of worthless junk"?
I bought it on a whim; it was only 10 bucks so I figured "What the heck ... I'll see what this is all about." It turned out to be an idea that never found its way to actually becoming a trick. You get a 20" piece of string and a small tube, about the diameter of a drinking straw and 2" long. You tie the string around the tube and feed one end of hte string through the tube. You then slide the tied knot portion off the tube. The purpose of the trick (I think) is for the spectator to ascertain whether the knot is in your fingers/hand, or hidden in the tube. One time the knot disolves and is in neither place. That's it; that's the entire effect. If you're thinking "So what?" you're not alone ... that's what any audience member would think too. In 20 + years of being in magic, I cannot think of a worse trick that I have ever seen marketed. |

I sure hope the revenge won't be on me for writing a negative review!

Actually, That trick was first marketed in 1947. If you bought an original, then you have a nice little piece of magic history in your hands.
If it is something that someone threw together today, then some scam artist is trying to make a few bucks off the "Stewart James" name. You see, you can get Monte Zooma in "Stewart James in Print." The book has some 400 effects by James, which makes the price for each, 25 cents. I can also guarantee that there are several effects that are worth upwards to $20.00 each in that book. I use them on a regular basis in my weekly restaurant work and would gladly pay that much for them, if I didn't already have them, and they were for sale separately. I wouldn't really blame James for this, but the person you bought it from. It's like complaining that Howard Thurston was a bad magician because someone reprinted a trick out of "400 Hundred Tricks You Can Do," and sold it for $10. Of course, you could work on it, come up with a great presentation for it and try it a few times on a live audience; see what happens. Regards, Brady |

Yeah, you could ... and it would STILL be a piece of garbage! LOL |

I bought it before reading this post, looking to add to my restaurant magic. It doesn't appear to be much of an effect but I can't believe Stewart James would create a bad effect, so I will continue to work with it.
