Another Julia Roberts movie...Stepmom...the son in the movie is a magician (all he wants for Christmas is a dove).
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

I just saw one that Ben Kingsly starred in called "Spooky House" (2000). Unfortunately it looks like Kingsly turned in a performance that seemed like he was fulfilling a bad contract and he just wanted it over and done with.

I just saw a short film with Apollo Robbins in it and it was related to sleight of hand and pick pocketing. Cannot remember the name, something about a heist I think.

The movie DOCTOR STRANGE starring Peter Hooten, even though it has a glaring discrepancy that one of the INCANTATIONS that Doctor Strange recites is "In the name of the Dread DORMAMMU", Dormammu being his enemy. Paradoxical to use the name of your enemy in your incantation.

I loved the comedy "Magicians" starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0841027/ It's a British film and I don't know if it was screened much in the USA so the Americans here might not have had a chance to see it. Mitchell and Webb are a duo who've made a name for themselves in the UK doing satirical and absurdist comedy series on TV and radio. They play two magicians who used to work together as partners but are now in bitter rivalry. The film pokes fun at the magic business but it's not harsh and is actually quite respectful in its own way. Scott Penrose worked on it as a magic consultant and there are cameos from a few other professional magicians, so it has a degree of autheticity about it. There are some nice digs at figures such as Blaine and Angel and some of the modern mentalist/psychological stuff that TV seems to like these days. I also particularly liked a gag aimed at the appalling "dance" routines that seem to feature in so many C-grade magic shows. |
