I just discovered this site yesterday and stayed up way too late, I can tell I will spend a lot more time here. I am a RN and dabble in walk around, close up magic suitable for the pediatric hospital seeting. I believe I can astonish anyone under 7 years old with my cheesy store bought magic. The D' Lite has been my favorite, cause I can steal the red light from the patients pulse oximetry probe and do magic with it before giving it back.
I have loved magic all my life but never progressed my personal skill beyond a small collection of self working gimmics and simple vanishes. I just got back from Vegas where I saw Lance Burton's show, and am on fire now to learn some new things. I would appreciate any help in finding new things which can work well in the hospital. I really am appreciating this forum!!

Hello, I'm Justin Style. Welcome to the Café!
FYI: Did you know I'm one of the original D'LITE guys? Me Rocco and the actual inventor, Roger Mayfarth. Roger invented the light for Rocco to use in his act in the 80's, the three of used to work different parts of the effect while Rocco would be on stage. I also have a program I perform in psychiatric centers in NYC...check out my story in the April 07 issue of Magic Magazine - Therapeutic Thaumaturgy. Give me a mailing address and I'll send you some D'LITES, let me know either regular or junior size. |

Wow, Thanks Justin talk about a welcome!! I have been using the regular ones, and it is the best effect in my mini pre- MRI show. I do a little coin magic, but it is not quite as satisfying to the kids cause too often the kids want to HAVE the money, and I just cant afford to pay off my audiences just yet.

Welcome NoVaCain,
I have only been on the forum here for several months myself, but have been into magic for some 30 years, performing semi-professionally, and I have found this forum to be a fantastic place for information and ideas. I come here not only to get help myself, but to be of as much help as I can be to others. You obviously enjoy helping others as well or you wouldn't be a nurse. I think that's great. I highly recommend that you make good use of the Café's SEARCH feature to check out things that you may have questions about. Even if it's something like "rope magic", "sponge balls", or "coin magic", you'll find that many of your questions have already been answered somewhere on the Café. There are also programs that you may be able to be a part of that may help you such as Kevin Spencer's "Healing of Magic" or David Copperfield's "Project Magic"; both deal with using magic as a form of therapy or a part of the healing process for people in hospitals. I'm not necessarily recommending one over the other, but you might find some useful resources for helping you to be your best in your environment. Do some searches on the web or here at the Café to find out more about it if you're interested. Anyway, that's my $.02. Welcome to the Café. You're among friends here. Oh, by the way, your first cup here at the Café is on me... Curtis http://www.CurtisMagic.com

Thank you so much Tora for the encouragement and warm welcome. I am so grateful for the support found here. It is such a thrill to have a chance to talk to REAL magicians, who are so kind and supportive to us newly inspired lovers of this great art. The small things I do for the kids to distract from scary or painful procedures is in no way spectacular, but when a child is quickly absorbed by the appearance/disappearance of a magic light or coin, it heals the mind and spirit for a bit..and that is good magic.

Welcome!
An RN that does magic! that's GREAT! that's a perfect blend of occupations. The Dlite effects with med equipment sounds really killer. Spongeballs are always fun in any atmosphere. My store also sells a "magic pencil" that would be great for adhoc effects.

Welcome. I feel the work you do is extremely honourable. If only there were more like yourself. I have a friend who although not a child is terminally ill in hospital. Your are completley right that maguc can heal.
Close your eyes. Open your senses.

I am sorry to hear about your friend Daniel, the hospital can be a terrible place to be at any age. Often the only escape from the realities of medical treatments is through the imaginations of the mind. Mental imagery, and meditation can do its part, but I think magic is more direct in that it appeals to the senses too.
