I did a search on this and found no previous discussion, so I thought that I would share with you all yet another free Google tool that you might find useful:
Google Alert Ever wonder how your competition is doing? Maybe they are getting gigs or press that you are completely unaware of. Well, if that information is made available on the internet in the form of News, Websites, Blogs, or Video, Google Alert can rat them out to you! It is as easy as setting up search terms. Let's say that I want to keep tabs on my good Café amigo, Kyle Peron. I simply put Kyle Peron as one of my search alert terms, and Google instantly starts reporting back any hits that it finds with those key words! Simply marvelous! Now Kyle has trouble keeping anything about him away from my prying eyes. If it was posted somewhere on an internet page, site, blog, video, I'm going to know about it. Maybe I'd like a report on any that comes along regarding Pennsylvania magicians - bingo! Its done. Now keep in mind that there is a great deal of non-related crap that comes along. However, it can be a very valuable resource tool - it is like your own personal wiretap of the internet, reportng back things that you'd like to be made aware of. Give it a try and see. It can be another valuable tool, just like Google Analytics. Chris |

I can see using this as a tool to keep track of your personal stuff like if your show is reviewed somewhere, someone steals a pic, etc. As far as "keeping tabs" on a fellow performer this is just a big waste of time.
Why would you care what other performers are doing? 2 things will happen once you check up on other people. 1. you'll get discouraged because they're booking more shows than you and 2. you're wasting a ton of valuable time worrying about what bob the magician is doing. Who cares? There's plenty of work to go around! Josh London |

I personally never knew why magicians think of this as a zero sum game.
Just because a guy gets work does not mean you lose work. The idea of "competition" in the first place is not sensible to me anyhow. Just me I guess. Just because you get a job, does not mean you take it away from another. Heck it may mean if you do a good job, others will be working. A guy at the show likes magic, and says to himself "hey maybe a magician for my kids birthday is cool". So then the birthday guy gets a show. It does make sense. A guy working does not mean you are not working. Unless you advertise in the exact same places as every other magician on the planet. But that is another thread.

Actually, it happend a couple of times. And it got kind of cold.
As I have a seat reserved there for the afterlife most likly anyhow, I like the idea of it being cooler.

I've used Google alert for years although I've never used it to "check out" my competition. There's no time for that.
I like it for finding articles about me that I miss- like the small town libraries and such. But yu are correct, there is a bunch of non-related stuff. There's an "Eric Paul" Johnson somewhere that keeps getting arrested. Keeps me grateful that it's not me! Here's the actual link for it: http://www.google.com/alerts EP

That is a great use Eric.
Google Alert is a great tool for staying informed. It is watching the internet for things that might be of specific interest to you. Personally, if something magic related is going on in my little slice of heaven, I'd like to know about it. As far as keeoping an eye on the competition - to me it's just a part of doing business. Wendy's keeps an eye on what McDonald's is changing on their menu, and vice versa. I like to keep an eye on what my fellow performers are doing. Google Alerts keeps me informed. Chris |
