Just be careful to research a lot and then make sure that your own creativity does not get too close to what McBride does. Masks certainly can be done and used in magic. The problem becomes when magicians become much too influenced by McBride etc. and their act ends up mimicking it instead of being original and fresh.

Joquain Ayala used to do a mask act that was pretty neat. I do tend to agree with Kyle - lots of people are influenced by McBride's act.

I think the problem is that we as magicians tend to use inward creative thinking instead of an outward approach. This is something I learned as an artist in art school learning to get my graphic design and illustration degrees. Basically inward thinking in regards to magic means that we look inwardly at magic for magical ideas. Instead we should switch gears and look outwardly for creative ideas for our magic. There is so much better creatiev resources that can be used if you look outwardly. Also outward thinking prevents you from mimicking or being too influenced by someone else you saw before.

Hi,
I think mask are very good for a magic act. But unfortunatelly when you use masks everyone can think you are a copy of Jeff McBride. I think you must create a new style on this object. magicially yours, Nedim Guzel |

Thank you magic friends,
I've been in this biss. for a time now .I can assure you I have no intention to copy from any or all of pros. It's a no no in any standard. That said I was exploring this simply beacause being in europe (Venice) for example has a very sofisticated CARNEVALE sort of a marti gra o hey like Brazil does,ok? and perhaps was looking into the idea to add some of it's fragments to a show when time comes. Respectfully Don. |

Both Shimada and McBride have a background in Japanese theatre, so you'd need to study Kabuki Theatre to start to understand the masks and what they really are.
That been said it would be very hard to bring out a mask on stage now and not have half of your audience start tittering, even if your act was from a completely different artistic view point, so many magicians are too ignorant of what a mask can be as a symbol and will simply think McBride. Paul |

What about this kind of mask: http://youtube.com/watch?v=sEgaC7EEsoc
If I do this act, will someone think that I was influenced by Julianna Chen act? I think as long as you have your own routine and creativities, it doesn't matter what other think? Same thing with one song is sung by different singers, nobody immitates any body, just who sings bettter.. Ken |
