Should IBM be doing more to more to stop Youtube exposure? I mean if they spoke to them, I'm sure that Youtube would start treating magic exposure (not clips, just exposure) the same way they do violent/pornographic videos etc and just delete them?
And while I'm here, can anyone tell me is that loser Cris Angel a menber of the IBM as well? |

Not a lot of anything the IBM, SAM or anybody except copyrighted film owners do to keep stuff off of YouTube

If the major studios and networks can't stop or restrict YouTube, there isn't much IBM and SAM can do. Besides, the IBM and SAM aren't some anonymous "They"...you and others like you are the IBM and SAM. So one might ask, what are you doing?
Personally, I've yet to run into anyone who blew off or exposed one of my effects due to what they've seen on YouTube. Personality and presentation pretty well camouflage's the exposed technique. YouTube doesn't bother me nearly as much as the Masked Magician.

Unless a trademark owner states to YouTube that Copyright infringement is currently taking place there is not a lot that anyone can do about people posting methods on the site. I’m not talking about “performance” videos, I mean the flagrant “Here is how it’s done” video’s.
I have talked to a few magicians and came up with the idea that a disclaimer could be used when selling effects to new people, stating that they will not post the methods of effects purchased on any public forum. Such an agreement could then hold them more accountable then just relying on common sense and hope. Just an idea

John, that's a great idea...however, like any trademark or copyright, it's only as strong as the owner's willingness to layout the time and bucks to track down, serve legal notice and prosecute.
On the other hand, with such a statement in hand, one might be able to encourage legitimate sites like YouTube to remove protected material without an overwhelming amount of bureaucracy. Certainly worth an attempt!! I think the IBM and SAM are on right track by creating structured youth programs that will help to teach the value of magic secrets and stress the importance of personal ethics. We'll never stop it altogether, but by providing these inquisitive and creative teens with a local supportive outlet and educating these future magicians and enthusiasts on the values we share we might make a dent.

Skip ~ I agree that most of it depends on the copyright holder to chase these people down, but if they don't want to take the time and effort to safeguard their work why should we? Did you know that most Magic DVD's only use basic copy protection software, that almost any burning software can bypass on its own?
If magicians are going to complain about exposure then they need to be willing to step up and help stop the issue instead of just sitting in the background complaining about it. Whenever I see and exposure video on YouTube I send an email to the person and ask that they take it down. Some do... Some don't but I try. Heck; get a petition going about the exposure of effects {you could do it online like http://www.ipetitions.com/start-petition and when you get enough signatures send it to the guys at YouTube. Could it hurt no, can it help maybe. Just my $.02

Ok my post seems to have gotten people up in arms.... So why stop there?
I personally WAS a member of the IBM but I left because I found them incompetent on a number of levels. But they have thousands of paid members all over the world and I think that if they approached Youtube, one organisation to another, they should be able to make a difference? They are after all the biggest magic ring in the world and I feel its their duty as a paid club to look after their art instead of just flopping out a 90% useless monthly magazine into our mail box every month. And to those asking what have I done... nothing. I'm not a multinatioanl business with connections around the world, they are. No matter what I did and how hard I tried, my best effort would end up being their starting point (or at least it should be with their connections and they money that they get from their members). But maybe I'm wronging them, maybe they have tried to do something and if so... fair play, they just werent very successful. Now flame away my pretties. Flame! |

Finny,
I am sorry your experience with the IBM has not been a good one. For me, I think it is a matter of how strong a local Ring is. I hope you don't get flamed for sharing your views. If 100 people like myself come here and say how wonderful the IBM is, it still does not negate your experience. I read a quote a while ago that said something to the effect, When trying to please all, some will be displeased. If you want to see changes to the IBM, I would imagine it would be easier coming from the inside rather than the outside. Some might say it's just sour grapes and dismiss your constructive criticism, no matter how valid it might be. Going back to your original post re: YouTube, exposure and the IBM, that is one of the reasons the organization created the Web portal. Recognizing the portal is in its infancy and will continue to evolve on nearly a daily basis, the goal was to create a starting point for all things magic on the Web. The thinking was the magician.org site becomes an entry point to magic sites, leading newcomers to magic to more beneficial sites. The longest journey begins with a single step, and this is a first step. Take care, Bobby

Yeah I don't think any magic organization can do anything. Its not like they have any sort of power. The only thing that will stop youtube exposure is talking sense into the kids.

Cheers for that Bobby,
Well first off I do agree with you about the local ring needing to be strong, I found the one I was in revolved around a few (four to be exact) "stars"... and everyone else was there to make up the numbers. No one else was consulted nor got a look in. Even though I gave that ring its name and was there when it was founded, I felt that this local ring had nothing to offer its members and wasnt constructive, and there for I left. As for the IBM... I wont go into the issues that I had with them but I do respect their obvious place in the magic community which is why I hoping that they might have done something to stop this exposure. But I do appreciate that perhaps we do live in an age where secrets can no longer exist due to technology making everything so available (in Ireland there is perhaps one half decent magic shop, if we didn't have the web to buy from....). Can you tell me more about this web portal please as I've never heard about it. And thank you for replying in such a decent manner, I just found that in the last while on the Café, no matter what your view point, you just have to expect to get flamed and there for, you get defensive automatically. I think both I and MANY others need to take up Timothy Drakes challenge. |

Reading about the web portal is easy. Just go to http://www.magician.org and it's all laid out there for you. If you create an account with your IBM number and password even more pages become available to you.
This is a "work in progress" so if you want something added or changed, just say so!
