I'll engage in light conversation and for adults, just a simple vanish and recovery of a coin. Their reaction is usually a gage as to whether they want to see more.
For kids, I find that Chameleon silks with a TT vanish at the end really rocks. I have a child who was slightly disfigured in a crash, and find that it's an excellent icebreaker to do magic for kids that might be staring at him. More than once I've had a parent say - Thank you. You handled that so well. I was so embarrased when little Johnny was staring, but didn't want to make a scene. I've found that magic really eases the tension in so many situations. Don't be brash - just be as amazed that something magical has happened, and people don't head for the hills when they see magic! Good Luck, Pete
Will anyone who believes in telekenesis please raise my hand?

I've jumped into this late, so flourish dude, Bob, and Peter have already given my answer: I open by saying "Hi!", asking them how they're doing, and engaging in general chit-chat. I believe that the easiest way to get them "on my side" is to be personable. To that end, I've worked on learning the meanings of names, so that, for example, when someone introduces himself as Tim I can ask "Do you know that 'Timothy' means 'gift of God'?" and get him talking about the subject he finds most interesting: himself. Immediately he's on my side, and almost any magic will be very well-received.

But what if the kid's name is Derriere Cranium, Bill?

I would use the same approach I employ when I meet Barbara ("stranger") or Mary ("bitter"): complement her on her hair.
(The kid was a girl, wasn't she, Doug?) |

Carlos Vaquera, uses Flash String to produce a coin and then does a "reversed gravity move" with it to get their attention.
He doesn't give an introduction though and this may appear abrupt and rude but he has stated who he is and what he does by doing this effect grabbing their attention. Different styles for different people i guess. Davé

Well now Jon, that does answer the question. my first routine is based on how it goes while talking. You'll learn how to read people very fast.. I find it really does not matter what you do. Keep this in mind....
"if they like you they will like what you do!" I will do any one of my routines as I see fit while talking with them. If there are kids I do PB&J (another plug for ol' Scott) I do the bent Penny all the time wow what a reaction it gets!! Heck I'll even do a card trick.. Ok group hang on cause it's going to get hot now on this thread. He opens with a card trick ?????

For myself I kind of like the visual approach. Something that stops conversation without waiting. Sometimes I will pretend that a piece of paper has been left on the table... I will pick it up as if to ask someone at the table if it belongs to them.
After a moment I lite it on fire, it turns into a coin. I look up to see if there is interest and if there is I perform a close up misers dream. Sometimes I just walk around with my trick The Spinning Thing with Lights. It is so good people ask for it by name..(cheap plug) Jim

"Sponge balls" It's not just a good opener for kids, but all people!
I do think that "visual change" is very important to draw people's attention. Therefore, I always start with JUMBO coins routine or HOT shot cut or multiplying sponge... Hope this help. Hirase

A good opener (which by the way needn't be a magic trick) should establish yourself with the audience quickly. It should grab their attention and let them know that you're a nice guy. It should tell them that you are a professional hired to provide entertainment. It should be short, direct and to the point.
It may also be good to establish your credentials as a magician early on. However, the choice of magic is the least important of the points listed above. |

Must agree with Matt, the Jardine/Setterington penetrating rubber bands is as pure and visual an opener as could be wished for.

I think David Regal's Sudden Deck would be a very good opener.

Just recently, I got the Hundy 500. After putting my personality to the effect, this is my new opener. Very nice effect!!! Very good opener and a good closer is the Ammar bill swith.

If you want them to instantly like you, do a bill switch from a one to a hundred and let them keep the note.
For years I used the Chicago opener. I believe that the most impressive ungaffed trick you can muster is a good opener ( Or a trick where you end clean). You don't want an opener that leaves you holding onto something which could be awkward if they ask, "can I take a look at that" and I don't mean they do it to test you, sometimes they're just legitimately inerested. Once they know everything is on the up and up and they have got to know you better, then start pulling out the gaffs. All the best. Billy |
