Hi there! I am wondering if anyone performs the cups and balls in restaurant conditions. I created a two cups and two balls routine especially for those gigs, but I do not like carrying around the cups in my hands...I think it looks bad if you put them into your pockets. So, what would you do?

Check out Scott Guinn's Table Hopping Cups and Balls routine. I don't own it but have only heard great things about it.

I am not looking for a routine, but for a nice way to carry around the cups, or perhaps someone who manufactures small cups that fit into your pocket...

Check out james risers site for some really supurb looking cups (come in a few different sizes). These are a little expensive, but very very good quality. James is a guest here at the Café and I understand that he is very helpful.
As for carrying cups around, there are lots of ways to do this. You could carry them in your pocket (I agree that this does not look quite right). You could have a drawstring bag or similar that is clipped/tied to your belt. You could have a crazy wire holder that holds them all seperately around your waist etc. The drawstring bag has a few advantages. It keeps them out of your pockets, It can give the cups a sense of mistique (depending on the bag, its colour, pattern etc), it is definietly (in my opinion) classier than pulling them straight out of your pocket. There are heaps of threads about this topic alrady on the Café, so just have a look around (you might also want to try the street magic section).

I made my cups and balls into a trademark routine and I perform it whenever tablespace is available.
And yes you're right; I also consider it not elegant to walk up to a table with anything as large as two cups in your hands and introduce yourself. I have two solutions: -I use the little "gimmick" that comes with the Splash Bottle routine to hang the cups in their drawstringbag on my belt. If you keep it to the side it will be psychologically invisible untill you need it. -Another option I sometimes choose is keeping the cups and balls for my second round. If time permits me, I like to go back to tables as per request or simply go the ones that had the most fun and offer them "something special". Since they already know me I feel completely at ease to have something in my hands, and it probably raises interest. Another option might be to get yourself some minicups. They will fit in you backpocket easily, without the big bulge...

Per the above post, Jim Riser makes a set of small cups that easily fit into your pocket with no buldge. They are beautiful to look at and they perfectly fit a golf ball for a final load. I maintain it's not the overall size of the final loads but it's proportion to the cups themselves.

Last week I was in a classy restaurant (as a guest) and since I arrived first, I set my Jim Riser Mini Cups up on the mantle over the fireplace.
Later, having cocktails with two other couples (one of the ladies always asks me to do some mojo) and after doing a card trick or two, I said, "Let's see what I can find here I can do something with..." I looked over at the fireplace and said, "Gee, these little copper pots look cool, let's see what I can do with them...." hehehehehehe And when them real golf balls appeared you would think I was king of the world! On other occassions, I just carry them in a jacket pocket and bring 'em into play. I use a small wand that has a spring inside that allows you to fold it in half and it pops into full length when I bring it out. I think this was marketed by John Cornelius and one end is magnetic (altho I have yet to use that feature).

In a resturant? Why not use the house coffee cups?
Also, if the staff like you, they could bring over the cups on a tray, provide oranges and things for final loads... seems a natural.

Cups and balls in a restaurant ??
I use the mini cups. One chop, and one regular. They fit nicely in my sport coat pocket. By the way Scott Guinn's routine is very nice, I just recently odrered it from him. He utilizes the mini cups in his routine as well. Dan Tong has a great table hopping routine using 1 regular size chop cup only, and let's not forget about Dennis Loomis/Jim Riser Micro chop cup routine. Performing in your hands, without the need for table space...It's a killer effect David Paul

I posted this somewhere else, but then again...
http://www.cupsandballs.nl Check out the minicups, look me in the eye and tell me you have seen more beautiful cups anywhere else... (Sorry for the shameless plug, I have no special interest in Auke van Dokkum's stuff, but he deserves to be noticed.)

If you decide not to go for the mini cups I'd go along with the idea of attaching your draw string bag to your belt. Hang it off the belt around the back and if you wear a coat the bag will be hidden until you need it and there wont be any ugly bulge.
And seeing theyre back there, you could even produce them when you need them, like from under a hanky at the end of a Jack Chanin style coin routine. Cheers Billy |
