I agree Danny. It’s psychological. People don't like the thought of paying $50 or $100 more just for your travel expenses. They may decide, "Hey there must be a local guy out there." I just give them the price that includes the travel expense and hope for the best.
Scott O. I like your .50 idea. It seems like it would be easy to work with for a mathematically challenged person like myself.

However, when you've got them on the phone, that's when some of the best secrets worth keeping are practiced in this business....one person's opinion. |

I'm in the minority here, but I charge what I charge regardless of travel. When I'm putting together a marketing campaign, I decide how far I plan to travel and base my price on those conditions. If I travel to the farthest points that my campaign markets to, then the price reflects what I need to come home with, after all expenses. And if I work closer to home, I bring home more money.
The minute you start fooling with your fees, like charging per mile, you've suddenly entered the used car salesman zone in many buyer's eyes. And, it violates my #1 rule... The easier you make it to book your show, the more shows you will book. Just quote them a price. You don't have to justify it to your potential client if you don't make it an issue. |

Based on that, then in your example you are losing money because you would need to add in an additional $35.00 or so just for gas to cover that mileage. If you did not add the extra in for gas then it would be coming out of your base price so in situation's like this when you have a gig father away your profit margin would be going down accordingly.

I do think that if something like mileage is going to eat into a profit margin, you may want to re examine what you charge.

Since I've never done any magic for money, this is all speculation...
But isn't there a danger of forcing the customer to your competition who might live closer and would have a lower travel fee (or maybe none at all)?

Which brings us to just give them one price.

Exaxctly Danny. YOU as a performer and business person need to be the one to factor in and decide what YOU need as a fee for what you do and offer etc. The prospect ONLY needs to know and hear a single price for what you offer. This makes it an easy choice and decision for the prospect to then make.

In addition to my fee, I always charge for mileage, airfare, ground transportation, accommodation, meals and incidentals. I have always made these expeneses totally transparent to the client. I have also never lost a show because of travel expenses. My clients (coroporate) expect to pay these and have never complained.
Having said that, I agree with Danny, Kyle, and others, and have recently moved to an "all inclusive" price. All of my expenses are still there, but the client sees one fee rather than a fee plus a list of additional travel expenses. No one has said anything to me about this, but I think psychologically, people may prefer the "one price" fee. Doug |

Depending on how far it is, I factor travel into the price quoted. People don't like "add ons". Looked at an airplane ticket lately? The base price is whatever it is, but then all the fees and surcharges can add another 30 or 40%.
People like to be told "The fee is ____" period.

The one price fee just makes it so much easier for the prospect. Think about it. When I go to hire a service provider (magician etc), do I really want to see one price and then a price for gas, then a price for travel and a price for lodging etc. etc.? Psychologically it is confusing and comes off as if you are trying to swindle them a bit before you even get hired. Factor everything out yourself ahead of time and know what you need to charge. Then just simply state and quote them one single price that includes it all. It makes it so much easier for them to say yes.
