Michael Finney's DVDs are hilarious! I agree, some of the funniest stuff I've seen in a long time. The live in lake tahoe series, is one of my best collection of DVD's, a lot of really good stuff. The worst thing about watching them is trying not to steal some of the routines and jokes.

I'm unsure as to what the rationale is for thinking otherwise. In fact I'm unsure as to what one would be supposed to gain from an instruction dvd if you can't use these elements from it. Sure the total package as presented by the performer can be virtually guaranteed not to suit you as it does them; exactly the same could be said for a new handling or a new effect; but elements within the routine, be they presentational, thematic, scripting, mechanical, handling, attitude or whatever might be helpful to act as possibly intitally a foundation and then hopefully later as a springboard for you to establish a way that works for you as your 'total package'. Think for example of David Williamson's dvd featuring the raccoon. If one removes the presentaion, attitude and script all you'd be left with is a raccoon puppet sitting there doing nothing. Now I admit the downside is you can end up with loads of really poor, word for word, inflection for inflection, imitations of David Williamson doing his raccoon routine. Certainly you can view these people as having poor judgement in doing what they're doing but I wouldn't argue from an ethical point of view that they shouldn't do what they are doing anymore than I'd be willing to argue that someone buying a set of Punch and Judy puppets and a script shouldn't then go out and perform that. I think it's both naive and arbitary to suggest that 'this' can be utilized but 'that' cannot. Unless specifically stated I would take it that whatever is put out is effectively being sold. That's why people become understandably upset when a dvd doesn't contain the material of the performer. (As an aside; I've bought both a dvd and a written manuscript recently only to discover I've being sold some of my own original material!) It would be interesting to hear other peoples take on this matter. Cheers Neal.

I have to second that, not only do I see it a lot on the Café but at the magic shop I work at, people always say how funny Bill Malone is on his videos. I know at times he'll do old jokes so maybe that's what turns me off, but in general, never really found him to be that funny.

I love the Tom Mullica put out by Steven's Magic. This has to be 20 years old or so but it's hilarious.

Here is my vote...
Funny Business - Niagara Comedy Magic Seminar 2007 DVD Available internationally from Murphy's Magic Supplies. I am biased because I edited the video but it showcases Bob Sheets, Dave Merry and John Ferrentino performing and more importantly has very in-depth interviews where they discuss their approach to comedy and magic. There are two panel discussions that reveal a ton of information about comedy, magic and the performance of both. ALthough there are no tricks revealed, important information about the performance of comedy magic is. I'd be interested to hear opinions/reviews of this DVD. Cheers Bill Abbott |

This DVD was a pretty good buy for me. My favorite thing about the DVD was giving me a clip of Dave Merry's show, I thought he was fantastic and am going to order his one man show from his website.
John Ferrentino's performance was nice but his first routine was basically terry seabrooke's burned bill routine word for word. (He did admit to that but still...) I usually enjoy Bob Sheet's performances but this one felt a little weak. Bob admits that his background is not a stand-up/comedy club setting (unlike John and Dave who played mostly that venue) but had a magic premise. Regardless, I've seen Bob do some funny stuff live and on DVD and thought he was great, I just didn't flip with laughter over this routine. Overall I felt the DVD was WELL worth it for the interviews and question/answers setcion. (And for Dave's performance but I think I've made it clear I enjoyed his style!)

My votes: Greg Otto, Jeff Hobson, Amazing Jonathan, Dave Williamson live (but, except for Rocky, not so much his DVD's), Tom Mullica, Jay Marshall, Bill Malone.

I need to amend somewhat that which I wrote in the previous post. After pulling out last night and watching again, after a few years, parts of David Williamson's older videos, I have to say that "Dave 2" is really very funny. I'd forgotten how good it is. While "Sleight of Dave" may not quite hit the highest mark in terms of humor, in my 'umble opinion, it is still a great instructional DVD, as are all of Dave's releases.

My votes: Jeff Hobson, Amazing Jonathan, Dave Williamson, Tom Mullica, Thom Peterson, Michael Finney, Johnny Thompson and Richard Sanders. All of these guys are very funny!
I also liked the Funny Business - Niagara Comedy Magic Seminar 2007 DVD. John Ferrentino was the best, in my opinion. I didn't find Bob Sheets funny and I thought his fawning on the woman questionable in terms of taste. The woman made a motion as if the hit him and I believe her nonverbals indicated she was irritated. |

You can't teach someone to BE funny. You can teach someone some funny lines and gags, but that is quite different than BEING funny. Either you are funny or you are not funny. For example Jeff Hobson funny is totally different from Michael Finney type funny. Could you image Michael trying to do Jeff's stuff? It would not be the same. I am sure Michael would make it funny because HE IS FUNNY, but it would be totally different from how Jeff would do it.
Steven Bargatze is the funniest magician I have seen. Have you seen the new book "Stand Up: A Professional Guide to Comedy Magic"? I have not read it but have put it on my Christmas list! http://www.magicbookshop.com/product_inf......id=14373

I don't think he has a video, however T.C. Tahoe is very funny, I recently seen him at a convention, and he had the audience cracking up. Good stuff T.C.
