I was wondering if anyone does a C&B routine in silence.
Not like a mime, but sort of "the magic speaks for itself." |

I've seen routines set to music, but with no talking or sound at all? No, not yet anyway.

I think that spoken words are a wonderful misdirection and above all very entertaining.
I have never seen C&B performed in complete silence. |

I have seen it performed to various songs and it can be done well ...it can also be done badly as with all magic.

At the restaurant I work in we get a lot of different foreigners, some who don't speak a single word of English. I always do my 2 cup routine at the tables and more than a few times, I've had to do it in complete silence because no one understands a word I'm saying. The only thing I'll use is the occasional hand gesture.

Imagine Charlie Chaplin performing C&Bs in one of his silent films. I think he would have been fantastic.
Gary Ouellet does a Silent Chop Cup routine in WGM DVD, and he was fantastic. Since I always keep the volume muted, I cannot tell you if Gary Ouellet performs this routine to music or not. Have fun folks! |

I do my routine to a song by Evanesence. I use three different colored balls, and a lot of cup acrobatics.

I often use fake Hungarian "doubletalk" totally fakek foreign words and it works for me. When doing Indian/Hindu cups I use a fake comedy high-voiced double talk as "an impression" of the young Indian magician that taught me.

One of my favorite things to watch is close-up magic done to music. So many times the magic can get lost with cheesy lines and such. I actually really enjoy it when I'm working somewhere with music playing and I sort of "jazz" a lot of my strolling performance. In order for this, the effects must be VERY clear. The coin disappeared from this hand, and now it's in in this hand. The card was in the middle, not it's on top. Many c&b routines need a bit of patter to explain what's going on. Try performing the Vernon 2 none 2 sequence without saying a word; probably not very easy. The same with the fake explanation that a lot of routines use. It can be done, but you may have to do a bit of restructuring of your routine.

Lattimer and Colombini both have silent routines, if I'm not mistaken.

A great example of a clasic (egg bag) done without words, just the RIGHT MUSIC and the RIGHT PERFORMER was Tom Mullica's Egg Bag routine.

It's great for the muscle memory of performing the effect, but it's not so good when the patter sounds tired. I won't even mention a name of one of the greats who makes me feel this way, for fear of being burned at the stake. |
