In Tony Clark's videos he talked about using a sponge to give water to a dove when traveling. This would avoid spills and the dove could get water.
I am concerned about my dove eating something not good for him. What kind of sponge should be used? How large a piece? What about food? I give my dove a small amount of food in a shallow dish after shows. He immediately dumps it over. Any recommendations? Thanks, Jay The Magician

There are a couple of solutions. If you transport your doves in a cage, you can get a covered cage cup that will stop some of the spillage. It also works for the seed.
You can use a normal piece of sponge in the cup. If I use that method, I cut a piece large enough to just about fill the cup or dish it is in and then add water. Doves drink by dipping their beaks under water. They don't have the ability to siphon in like a straw but when they peck at the sponge, enough water comes up to give them a taste. I've never seen one try to eat the sponge. I've also used regular paper towels the same as a sponge. It isn't as absorbent and doesn't hold the water as long but it works nicely. When I ship doves, I use either the sponge or papertowel method and they suvive just fine. I guess bottom line to your question is any sponge will work and you don't need to be concerned with the doves ingesting it.

I have never had any problems with my doves eating the sponge either. They are happy to just peck at it for the water.
As for the seeds, doves are messy eaters! They throw the seeds everywhere to find their favourites. They will eat the seeds from the floor as they are ground dwellers, so this is not a problem. I normally find when I am travelling with my doves, the container of seeds gets tipped by one of the birds and they are scattered all over the bottom and I have found that this can actually make it easier for all the birds to get to the seeds. But as you only have one bird, I don't think this would be a problem anyway. Hope this helped! All the best, ~Ed |

I've also used bread to soak up the water that way they do get some kind of food-esque suppliment if it is a long flight or travel time. I do not recommend this for when you're takign them on gigs and whantot because you do not want the bread to get nasty. This is just in flight travel or shipping travel. Especially if you get caught in a long layover or a flight delay/cancellation, etc etc.

Hansel,
What is that? Dan, I like the bread idea. It certainly won't hurt the doves. As far as getting "nasty" how about using it only on the way home and dumping it? Thanks again to all for responding. Jay

Hello Everyone,
If you are going to use a sponge to make water available for your doves, make sure that when you buy it, the sponge does NOT contain soap or any other product. Many of the sponges sold in supermarkets and hardware stores are meant to be used for washing dishes. Needless to say, any type of detergent could be harmful to a dove or the very least unpleasant. I realize that many of you are aware of this, but I just thought I'd mention this so as to be safe rather than sorry!
Channing Pollack is my idea of the perfect magician. For those of you that have not seen him perform, I recommend trying to get hold of a video of an old movie called "European Nights" made about 1959.

When I received the loaned doves from Amos's good friend & neighbour, David in US.
What they did is to cut a hole in the centre of the sponge & filled with water...neat idea! |
