As performers we should always be looking for new ways to involve our audiences and
most importantly for them to have a great time. I know this may sound weird but I'm having a great time having people make the magic happen by placing their finger on a deck of cards for example and making a noise that sounds like and electric shock. That's where the BZZZZZZZZT !! comes in. Yesterday I was performing at a private party doing a 2 card transpo. The people saw that the cards they held were not their cards so I had them touch fingers and say BZZZZZZZZZZT. (like a shock sound) I said,"Wouldn't that be magic if the cards are now the correct cards? The rest was princess. Something so simple as getting people involved making funny sounds and getting them to interact with each other really does add to the entertainment. It made me laugh as I was strolling around the event to see some people touching each other or things making the BZZZZZZZT!! sound. They had fun and that's what it's all about. Just wanted to share ! BZZZZZZZZZZT !!

I've been having spectators make different sounds when touching cards for a while now. Haven't tried 'Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt' yet, but I have found that having them go "boop" gets a huge laugh, while "beep" gets nothing.

Do you think making the 'magic' sound strengthens the overall effect?

I think that a magical sound, phrase or gesture that "makes" the magic happen definitely strengthens the overall effect. I know some people think that the magic should simply happen, I would suggest reading Richard Osterlinds "Metal blast" for more on the subject of making the magic happen.

Michael Skinner spoke of this years ago concerning there being a magical moment rather it be a snap of the fingers or a magical word it greatly enhances the experience, Quick ex. if you sleeve do a vanish of a coin with just normal movement , then do it again with a snap of your fingers it improves dramatically.

I will usually have the spectator snap their fingers & say a magic word. The magic word is usually something silly I make up on the spot. It's a nice moment of comedy that makes the magic happen. If I'm being more serious,I will rub my hands together & wave them & snap my fingers to make the magic happen

Do you think some words, or gestures could potentially weaken an effect?

I think if the gesture is suspicious, the spectators may think that is when you did something sneaky.

I have an entire routine that focuses on 3 words that "make" the magic happen... Snap, Slap, Jump. When I have the spec say it repeatedly over and over, it gets an enormous laugh from everyone at the table, including them. And it also gives me reason to make noise, so other people are also drawn to ME.

I use a fart machine under my vest.
time it with the spectator taping the deck. you can always sniff out a good laugh if you put your mind to it.

Sounds and music have been used by this nearly normal guy for many years.
My wife continues to try to limit them to my work..rather than when I get bored in line at Walmart. Mouth sounds, cartoon sound generators, mosquito whistle, harmonica and spectator created noises add to the fun. How about asking your spectator to make up his/her own sound... I love surprises..but be ready....
