I use 3/4" drugstore type dice. At first they're a little hard to control, but experiment with small grip changes and try a little Sort-Quick on your fingers. It's worth the work, because the larger dice display better.
And, because the spots on the drugstore dice are recessed, they look a little better when the trick is performed. That's my experience, anyway. |

Whatever works for you, and Sol Stone would definitely agree with you, as the dice he supplies with his routine aren't razor edge, they're 5/8" drugstore dice.
Though I don't think you can get away from the fact that for most folks, razor dice are easier to manipulate, with sharp edges giving traction where the drugstore dice can slip when you least would like them to. Of course, with practice (which I had to do, as I use Sol's routine and therefore Sol's drugstore dice), you can make it work.......but if I could get Sol's dice in a razor 5/8" set, I'd do it in a heartbeat. |

Just received the Ivory Connection in the mail, and had a chance to view it.
All in all, the DVD is great. I noticed that it was probably shot a while ago, just because of the fact that Reed has lost so much weight, and he still has some of it on the DVD. So, I would be even more interested to see how (if at all) the routine has changed (perhaps even getting a shot of him performing at Dante's). If you watch the old VHS and the new DVD you do see changes in the routine, just as if you look at Steve's lecture notes, and then watch his presentation, there are differences. I am really glad that both performers are shown, and each explains their version. They talk about the choices they both made in the routine, and why they made them. On the DVD they are using Drugstore Dice. I do the routine using either Casino Dice or Drugstore, and find that it works just as well with either kind. That is just what I have found. The nice part is that you are moving the dice constantly so you have a chance to straighten the dice up if one type slips more for you than the other. Teaching is clear, the DVD is well shot, and I will add, the Magic Bakery's shipping was very fast. All in all, if you don't perform professor Sach's routine or you are looking for a twist on the routine, or just looking for a nice close-up piece of magic, I recommend this DVD. RevJohn |

Hi everyone,
I was lucky enough to get a review copy of the Magic Bakery's re-release of The Ivory Connection. I had purchased the original when it was first released by Reed and Steve. I like this routine and it is very interesting to see both Reed and Steve presenting it. I think it is valuable because you get a good chance to see two different performing styles. In Reed's case, you get a chance to see this performed before an audience and in the studio. Steve's presentation is only done in the studio. The same routine with widely divergent personalities and presentations. When I first decided to add a dice routine to my repertoire, I researched the literature and video resources. Bruce Elliot's Classic Secrets of Magic; Jim Lewis; Steve Draun; Bob Sheets; and Ivory Connection all contributed to what is now my own handling. I always try to research--this allows you to pick and choose the best items to bind together into a working piece. Reed and Steve do a great job teaching. The camera work and production are great too. I appreciate the new work of the Magic Bakery! I think that you will like what you see! I reccommend that you add this to your list of resources. Respectfully, Paul Green PS I receive no financial rewards from my statements. |

OK, first let me say this. I'm a CardGuy. Rarely do I do anything else. HOWEVER, I was lucky enough to see this DVD and I have to say that I'm impressed. I'm an old guy and I remember when the first magic videos came out. (Earl Nelson in BETA, believe it or not!)
I saw this DVD and the first thing that impressed me was the production quality. It puts other magic DVDs to shame. Steve Brook's knowledge of video production has really been proven. I happen to be lucky enough to have spent time with both Reed and Steve and in my opinion they understand magic on a different level than most do. Not only that, they understand how to teach it. This is one of the few DVDs I've seen thus far that has the possibility of getting me to pick up something other than a deck of cards. If you know me, then you know how hard that is to do. I hate to admit it, but it made me look around the house for some dice... Steven Youell P.S. I was not compensated in any way for these comments and if you even THOUGHT I was, you've wounded my inner child. |

Not to mention this is one of the better hanldlings of this type effect (at least in my opinion). Plus - you get to learn 2 seperate methods from Steve and Reed as well as learn their original handling (so in reality...you get 3 methods). One last thing...listen to what Steve Youell has to say above...he is absolutely right...HE IS OLD !!! Mike |

Paul, Steven and Mike -
Thank you so much for your kind comments regarding The Ivory Connection. DVD production (when done well) is never an easy task, so hearing positive input from others is always welcomed and is extremely encouraging. The bakery elves and myself do our very best to produce the best product possible. Given that The Magic Bakery is a small company and we don't have all the fancy toys that larger companies (e.g, L&L Publishing, Bob Kohler, etc.) have to work with, I think we still give them a run for their money.

I think Steve Brooks did a very cool job on this project. It is always more interesting to see one trick done with different styles. We don't see that to often on dvds and steve was on point with that

It is nice to see this material was shot again using the good cameras etc.. It is a wonderful routine using common items. But folks, please practice it until you have it down before you perform it. The trick deserves to be done right.
Since Reed is here and this Magic Bakery has a camera, I've got a question. Reed, do you think enough time has passed since you so politely pulled your mini-ring routine off the net where you might consider marketing it? I still consider it to be one of the most beautiful ring routines one will see and you were stand up enough to pull it, but maybe it is time to get it out if you still wanted too. |

I got this because I like Reed and Steve Dobson and enjoy watching professional’s work. I may not care for the material, but there is always a lesson to learn.
Also, I can't stand dice routine's ( I know, many pro's swear by them ). I'm not saying they're bad, It just doesn’t fit me ( I don't like 3 ball routines and had people PM'ing that I didn't know what I was talking about. ). I put on the Ivory Connection last night and...WHAT THE $%$%??? Rewind, and I watched the beginning again. Smoked me. I still haven’t finished the DVD. But, I love Reed’s routine and his performance is beautiful. Anyone that wonders what it's like to work in a restaurant, this is what you'll get. A table of folks that are having fun and ....playing off you back and forth. Watching Reed handle it ( because you have to stop your routine to answer their lines ) will be a valuable lesson for lot'sa folks. I’d like to see producers add at least one live performance on a DVD. I know it might be expensive, time consuming, etc. I don’t mind paying extra for a DVD that has it. I haven’t even gotten to Steve Dobson’s part and I feel I got my monies worth. BRAVO!!!

Both Steve Mayhew and Jack Carpenter rock and rock hard! Great material and I'm anxious for everyone to see this stuff - very exciting!
By the way, while I was at the GGG in San Francisco, Steve Dobson did a killer lecture and featured the Ivory Connection. It was great seeing many folks wandering the halls with dice in hand.

The best Lecture to this day that I have attended was Steve's lecture in Eugene, Oregon about 10 years ago. Not only is he talented, has the moves, entertaining, but he can teach really really well.
Do you have an idea when these are going to hit the street? John |

They are scheduled to be released later this year - stay tuned.
I was just playing around with some black razor dice this afternoon - the routine really looks good using them.

Another excellent offering from The Magic bakery, I had the original on VHS years ago, which was good, but lacked in production values & only had Reeds handling. On this new version we get Reed McClintock's handling & Steve Dobson's handling of this excellent effect. Either version will find a place in your repertoire, it packs small & plays big.
I give it- Mike |
