793.8 That's the place for magic books in the library using the standard numbering system. You've had to go to every library in every town you ever visited to check out their magic books, if you had been severely bitten by the magic bug when very young, as I had been.

It's 793.8 -- "point 8," not "comma 8."
Think of Dewey (and I don't mean Herb).
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

And if you go into a library in the UK you'll find the magic books under the same Dewey Decimal number.

Most continental European countries use a period as the thousands separator and the comma to set off a decimal value. In the US and UK, you write one thousand five hundred forty-nine and sixty-three hundreths as 1,549.63; in France and the rest of Europe, you'd write it as 1.549,63.

I used to scrawl 793.8 as a "secret number" on a scrap of paper
and give it to people mysteriously after shows if they pestered me for information. Didn't explain what it was or the numbers significance. I figured if they could work it out they were ready to learn what's available. I sometimes wonder how many did. |

As a child, every time we traveled, went on vacation, or moved to a new town my first request was to go to the local library and look up 793.7 (or 793.8) to find magic books.

I went to visit someone today, and she was excited to show me her library, so we went inside, and I conducted a test. I walked to the 793.8 and saw a mere 3 magic books. Poor, poor library.
