I'm looking into a great dice routine and wondered if anybody could share the pros and cons between "It's the Rules" by Bob Sheets versus "Ivory Connection" The by Reed McClintock and Steve Dobson.
How are the routines compared - teh logic , the story, the climax Does it involve gimmicked dice? can they be handed out for examination Which one to choose? Best regards Jan |

You can also check out Daryl's version of sack's dice trick (which is basically what the others are too) which is real nice. it's also a "key buy" if you get it on the world's greatest magic "magic with dice".
I like Daryl's the best, followed by it's the rules. steve draun also has a version. that DVD also has: mendoza's dice stacking routine daryl's chink-a-chink with dice Killer deal.

I learnt the Dr sacks routine of the Fooler Dooler DVD by Daryl and took the routine out and very quickly it became something I always did. I got the Bob sheets it’s the rules because it has a slight different handling which means you can use bigger dice. The Ivory connection is just a another way and its added a few bits like the dice magical appear and disappear, but hay were creative people we can work out that for our self’s with our preferred handlings that suite us more.
Do learn a version of the routine I would go for it’s the rules so you can use larger dice. What ever you do you wont regret this.

Yes, I forgot about that. though I think I prefer Daryl's routine Bob Sheet's handling is real good and should be studied regardless.

Great thanks a lot. I'll look into Daryl and Sheets unless somebody really favors Ivory Connection.
Does any of the routines use gimmicked dice? And without revealing any method, can you say why Daryls routine needs smaller dice than the Sheets routine. Should I buy regular sized 19 mm Red and White casino dice? Or should I buy other Dice? |

White dice with black spots are the easiest for spectators to see, but red and white will work just fine close-up.

19mm are fine. you can try larger ones later when you find them.
too big and they're too hard to carry around.

If you want to get a really good handling on Dr sacks dice routine then I suggest James Lewis's video or dvd Dr Sacks ,,it is as close to the origional you will find

I don't think that daryl's needs smaller dice. sheets teaches a method that allows larger dice. once you learn the method, I don't see why you could not use it for any of the routines. it's a subtlety that makes the handlings slightly easier to do. some think "a lot" easier to do.

Each routine has its pros and cons, and most of them are just subtle differences.

Yes, ivory connection does have a good ending.
The nice thing about this kind routine is that you just carry around 2 dice. Larger are more visible but more difficult to carry around.

Some time people have remarked when I use dice you can see throw people remark that theirs no inner workings. However saying that no one questioned inner workings when I use solid dice. Experiment with size of dice sheet handling allows for this more but it is possible with the other handlings to use larger dice. If your around a friend house for a game night or there a kids game do it almost off the cuff with there dice but make sure there dice is set right or odd things will happen. You can tell a dice is set right by holding it so you can only see face 1,2 and 3 which should go anti clock wise hope this makes sense.
I have enjoyed learning many versions and it helps as I do this trick a lot to change slightly helps to keep it fresh for me.

........I am sad to say that I purchased Bob Sheets' "It's the Rules" dice routine DVD. I feel I can review it without having made it all the way through because my complaint is with the production, itself. The DVD consists of spoken word and music. My TV gain is usually set on 4 for quiet listening and sometimes as high as 18 for soft speech. On this DVD the (obnoxious,noisy) music is orders of magnitude too loud, both by itself and over the explanations. To watch it, I had to man the volume control the whole time - changing it from 18 or so for the talking and then down to 4-6 for the "music". Sometimes there is music *and* instruction. I believe it is really inexcusable to sell such an amateurish DVD which purports to teach a complicated subject. The magic is probably fine if I can get past the frequent startling music interruptions.

I use a variation of James Lewis' Sack dice routine. By that, I mean I eliminated the middle phase to make the routine run a little shorter ( A suggestion from Ray Kosby ). It's now one of my "go to" effects when performing close-up or walkaround. Sometimes, I'm amazed at the response it gets. After some trial and error, I find that bright, translucent, green dice with white spots show up the best for both close-up performance and for longer distances.

I still remember seeing Ivory Connection for the first time when I started magic. It blew me away. I bought ivory connection and It's The Rules. The Ivory Connection still wins in my opinion.

Here's my two cents.
Whenever I am considering adding a new trick/routine to my repertoire, I look into EVERYTHING I can find. It is not choosing one resource over another, it is finding the best stuff out there. I call it research. By looking into many resources, I can then pick and choose the BEST out of each thing. It might be a subtle handling, or a better script. You pick and choose and then make the routine yours. Enjoy the search! Respectfully, Paul Green |
