We want to add lights and special effects to our show and wanted to know what you do when you get a show (in a banquet hall) what you have for lighting, special effects, and any other important stage setup info.
Thank you for your help, Grand Illusions |

Depending on the show format, if it is a private engagment the only special lighting that I use is a spotlight.
The only venues I would be more elaborte in lights/effects is theme parks, or venues that I rent out to produce a show. My show stays simple for banquets, but it does depend on what kind of money your getting and who it is for etc. For me simple is better. |

It depends on what you are doing for that show. Obviously if you are using illusions you will need precise lighting. VIA your own system or on-location stuff. Only and only if it works for your needs.
I work with illusions and to me it's a waste of time if I can't light them correctly. Lighting certain effects can be crucial to achieve the overall effect. Example: You are using let's say some type of illusion that uses a shadow image projected on scrim or paper. Like a shadow box or artist dream. If you can't control the lighting properly you wont get the shadow to cast to be visibly seen by the audience. Then you loose the entire effect. In my personal expense working at schools and corporate functions I have been lucky to find good system time to time. But there have been times were I have looked at the location before hand and turned it down b/c the lighting system was bad. Always look at your location before hand. Also take you material and do a full show rehearsal on site. Take a video camera and set it up in the audience and record this rehearsal. That way when you watch it you can see were you need to make your adjustments or pull something form the show b/c it wont work in that venue. I am working on getting my own light ,sound, f/x gear so I can travel with everything I need. Plus since it's mine I already have everything programmed and will only need to work out the bugs depending on the location. This is what has worked for myself. And I hope this helps you in someway. All the best, Mike |

I know this seems a little over the top - but consider the paycheck !
We do own our own lighting system - 12 scanners as well as 8 moving heads - all controlled by a pc. This system is made available to each and every client. Basically, we rent the lights from ourselves - but at a slightly reduced rate to the local supply houses ( that way if the client gets a little frisky and wants to do the research, they find that we are cheaper ) In addition, we have designed a lighting sequence for each illusion we perform. now....each illusion we use can not fit in every venue. ( the escape is 13 feet high and has a footprint of 32 sq feet ) After all is said and done, the client gets a show that blows them away and it is minimal work for the crew - in fact, this weekend I am acting as MC for an annual event - we will load in on Friday afternoon and maybe have 2 1/2 hrs of rigging ( using 8 scanners ) the event is Saturday Eve. I will accomplish this with one one crew member. I have said it before on this board....if you use cheap lights, you look cheap. Now, there is no need to spend tons of cash on lights that are overkill for the venues you work ( I.E - High End Studio spots - they are 575 wats, weigh about 40 lbs each and are really odd looking in a smaller hotel ballroom show ) Take your time and look into what is available out there. There are some "intelligent" lights on the market that would work well. DO NOT use the work lights from Home Depot ! Just my thoughts Kline
