Well I hope he doesn’t call my center.
I have to say, Donald knows this market, (all of the kid show market for that matter) as well if not better than anyone on the internet. I would certainly listen to him. But I don’t think it’s just the daycare market, anytime and anywhere you make something up that’s not the truth it’s a lie, period, in my book. Now in all fairness, I have to agree with Danny. Even tho he may have used a bad example for this thread, he does make a good point. It is a big ole lying world out there, anyone who has something to sell, (and we all do) will sometimes use the little white lies to their advantage. We feel we are allowed a little stretching. Some can stretch little white lies farther than others before crossing the line. But that’s because we all have to draw our own lines. Just my opinion of lying, but guess what, my opinion about lying goes out the window when I get on the phone. It’s the other persons opinion that counts. Unless I make it believable, they’re not going to believe me anyway. Tom

Usint a different name is dishonest? Really that is what we are saying right? I must be in the Twilight Zone.
Hey is it dishonest to claim to be busier than you really are so you can inflate your price? You betcha, but how many who call me dishonest do that? Hey is it dishonest to say "Let me check my callendar" when you know DARN WELL that it is free that day? By this strict definition it is dishonest. Ever do that guys? Seems like you want to pick what you are and are not "honest" about. How many do the "educational" shows with no background in education? Oh lots! Dishonest? FAR more than using a darn different name to make it more comfortable selling. Is call screening "dishonest"? I mean heck you are really home and really COULD answer the phone. Like I said lets apply this standard of "honesty" to all things we do and see where we end up.

Yes, using a different name is where it crosses the line with most. But then, what if you didn’t give your name at all? What about the buyer lying, think he is completely honest in putting you off? It’s a never ending thing. I guess it's kind of hard to be an honest liar nowdays.

Right where the rubber meets the road they get EXACTLY what is being sold and paid for. Where is the DISHONESTY in that?
But as Donald has pointed out I have not hit the big time and don't work the daycare circuit. Heck I never KNEW IT EXISTED so what do I know?

Danny has a good point.
The dishonesty we see in other people is always so wrong - our own is always justifiable. Destiny |

At last...a reason to use a stage name that doesn't include safety from stalkers...
Danny's approach is solid even if it does wilt some of the more sensitive moral flowers in our midst. He is right...someone talking about you has more credability than you talking about yourself. How can this approach be modified to satisfy? For me, it is pretty simple. My stage name is my product. I call and say "My name is Michael O'Hair, and I represent Gwyd the Unusual, a phenominal act that I think would go great at your next event." I have not lied in this statement. My name is Michael O'Hair. I am selling Gwyd the Unusual which is an act, not who I actually am. Let's change it a little. "My name is Jeremy McFadden, and I represent Puddles the Mime, a brilliantly funny Mimed comedy act for children aged 5-9!" Jeremy is of course, Puddles the Mime. Should the Mime be calling them on the phone instead of Jeremy? *ring* *ring* *click and answer from the other end of the line* "Hello?" ---33 Long seconds of silence-- Mimes can't do cold calling. If it is too late to use a stage name, give the show you are offering a name of it's own. "Hi there! My name is Jeremy McFadden, and I represent the Silly Mime Super Spectacular Show, an absurdly amusing act that I think would be great for what you guys do!" And then talk about the act. Talk about your PRODUCT...NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOU TALK ABOUT YOURSELF!! Tell them what the act can do for them, the reactions it gets, how professional it is. Yes...It is you, but it is the PRODUCT you are selling that you are talking about. Personally, I have no problem with what Danny said to do. I'm not squeamish about taking on a role, even in real life. If I didn't have a stage name, I would have no problem doing it. As it is, I don't have to. Gwyd |

Right on - same deal here - I'm selling a character and I am sure not going to introduce myself on the phone as 'The Vampire'. Destiny |

I have friends that book out XXX and XXX the clown, when XXX and XXX the clown are actually he and his wife. They tell me that clients have called back to tell them that XXX the clown did such a wonderful job at their event. They had no idea that they were talking to Mr. XXX the Clown. IMHO, it would be hard for YOU to book yourself as your Vampire character. How would you talk? |
