For less than $10.00 you should get The Amateur Magician's Handbook by Henry Hay.
For such a low price you will get so much. Do get the above mentioned books, they are invaluable but do add to your collection Henry Hay's book as a valuable addition. Iven

I got it, I got it... I practice all the time. I have practice with my Books, practice with My DVD's I practice while surfing online as I wait for screens to load. I guess I am going through a buying stage. And yes... time to get serious.

I agree with what's been posted previously about purchasing other, more affordable books. However, I do think everyone should own the Tarbell series. I started by buying a single volume (1) with the intent on slowly collecting them all.
You should also look online at non-commercial sites, specifically online communities like CraigsList. I live in NYC, where CraigsList is an over-active behemoth, but even mid-size cities everywhere seem to have their own CL (or are close to one that does). I ended up buying the complete set for $80 on CL. I actually did a little dance when I got my treasure to the subway, much to the consternation of the homeless guy trying to sleep a few seats down.

Books are the way to go! We have been adding more and more to our online store after getting so many requests for the classics.
Craigslist and Ebay are a good way to go if you are on limited budget and don't mind used books. Some people keep books in great shape - others treat them rough. Im a picky person when it comes to book condition. The Café section here also has many people selling treasures in the form of books. I would stay away from the ebook versions - most are bootleg copies and very poor in production.

Books can be a reference as well. If you can afford it, you can create a a library of material to be viewed over a lifetime in magic.
I like Tomy Wonder's "Books of Wonder". I've recently re-read "The Secret Art of Magic" a great resource on misdirection theory and street magic.
