Thanks Erlandish,
Yes you're right, it has indeed been by maintaining, not just quality magic but an entire quality comedy magic show, that reliably delivers the goods, that I've remained consistantly in demand and in work for over 25 years. Hopefully I'll continue to do the same for more years to come. Neal.

Flew right over your head, that one did, eh? Looks like "missing it" isn't a phenomenon solely on this side of the pond... |

Oh man; now that really made me laugh.
You make a post having a dig at me by sarcastically praising the quality of my work (even though you've never seen me work or even met me) I make an ironic reply to your sarcasm by responding as if your blatently sarcastic comments were genuine (thereby subtley pointing out how misplaced your sarcasm was) You completely miss the irony (what a surprise), conclude that I've somehow missed your blatent sarcasm and then, as the icing on the cake, make a smug post about ME "missing it". Now that's funny. Erlandish; I hope you can see the funny side of it too. (no sarcasm intended) and I apologise for my smuggness in this post. Neal

Neal has a very valid point. One I've agreed with for many months now.
I believe that "Now that's funny!" was created originally to discuss comedy magic. It has for the past few months been nothing but joke threads. I've stopped visiting this section of the Café as much as I use to because no-one is talking magic anymore. Perhaps we need a new category for things like "Gag tag" or "Would you rather?" and get back to discussing magic and comedy as an art.

When I originally posted "Gag tag" it was supposed to be as an exercise in improvising and creating comedy. I think such exercises can be as (if not more) important than actually discussing the ins and outs of such a diverse beast as comedy itself.
Gag tag evolved into a different beast all together and I can't really be bothered with it anymore. |

May I humbly suggest that the real humor at the Café is in the "Not so Magical" forum?
I come here to blow off steam and get a cheap laugh or two. But I don't practice or experiment being funny. I do that in the other forum. So I completely agree with Neil. Making stupid jokes about red jackets is fun, but it certainly doesn't challenge us to experiment with humor. Does it? In the other forum, sometimes we're funny, sometimes we're not. The difference is that we are trying and we are experimenting with more than punchlines or red jacket jokes. We often fail. Maybe we usually fail. But failure is a very important part of learning. I think George knows exactly what I'm talking about. You might have to read a long time in the other forum, but at some point you'll find stuff a LOT more creative and thought provoking than the "take my wife...please" kind of humor we're doing here in the "funny" forum. A guy came up to me after a show once and said the following:
Great show. Do you do comedy? seriuosly. |

Hoping for something more considered by who?
I seem to like all kinds of humor. Not everyone does. Many people despise puns and don't think they are funny. I find them hilarious. Two-thirds of a pun is afterall P-U. I even love a good knock-knock joke. I love kids jokes. I love anecdotal humor and I love sarcasm. I love a loooong joke with a kicker ending. I love double-meaning humor and even slapstick. I also love experimental humor. The "game" threads fall into the experimental humor category in my opinion. A good joke every post - no way. Probably a giggle or grin every 12-20 posts (sometimes more frequently, sometimes less frequently). "Now that's funny" section is supposed to be about comedy magic. I can find nothing more challenging than to try to be funny in a game thread. All those that participate in them are trying for the same thing - trying to be funny in certain setting. Sometimes you are dealt a really good hand and sometimes its rough. I find this excellent training for live magic shows - thinking fast on your feet - trying to be funny - trying to get out of an uncomfortable situation in the middle of a show. If you do comedy on stage you know that there is little in the way of practice for improvisation. Even if you carefully script your shows - often something comes up in a show and derails your script - often for the better, for the funnier. The game threads are improvisational in character and aren't always a laugh riot - but I am thankful for them and the "practice" I receive from them. It is also good to note that the presence of the game threads does not eliminate the other threads and anyone can post to any of them at any time or start a new thread from scratch. Just my .02 cents worth. Larry |

My point wasn't that they're inherently a bad idea, just that, to me, they seem to have reduced the broader range of comedy magic, ideas, themes and subjects that used to get discussed on this section of the Café. The merits of the content of these game threads can be debated but as it's largely going to be what individuals' sujectively find tickles their funny bone it would probably be pointless. I was just hoping that my comments would remind contributors here that the game threads are not all that this section of the forum need be about. But I'm happy for the game threads to florish if people want to post on them and have made a few posts myself on the most recent one to appear. Cheers Neal
