Has not changed. The price of an oil change is fairly stable as well.
If crude oil is over $120 a barrel, shouldn't a quart of oil at the gas station be higher? There are so many products that use crude oil, but their prices are not jumping as fast as gas. Is it just me? Or is something fishy going on?

My car uses synthetic oil which is about $7.00 a quart. The good news is the car doesn't burn any oil.

My car uses the oil I get from working acne-laden teenagers in sweatshops.

How many steps does it take to refine motor oil (not as many as fuel) and what percentage of oil makes up a can of motor oil?

A significant increase in the price of gasoline doesn't impact the quantity demanded very much -- most of us still have to, or want to, do quite a bit of driving. Try the same thing with motor oil, and my guess is you'd find that people would be quite happy to get their oil changed after 4,000 miles instead of 3,000 -- a 33% drop. Or in economic terms, gas and oil have a different price elasticity. Increasing motor oil prices presumably wouldn't help profits; increasing gas prices does, because we keep buying it.

They are building cars in India that they sell for $2,500, so imagine the impact that will have on our economy.

I'm guessing that motor oil can be made with inferior (less expensive) grades of oil, and does not need to be refined / process to the same extent that gasoline does. It should be noted that many refineries are suffering from the high oil prices. You can see that the share price of these refining companies' stock are all near 52 week lows: http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=wnr http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=FTO http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=VLO

That's correct Balducci. Gas is meant to burn, oil is not; they are quite different. Also, I believe oil is made in large batches and stored with a long shelf life. So, it could be that motor oil manufactures haven't paid replacement cost ... but they will. Someone also mentioned synthetic oil, which has a better viscosity, therefor it lasts longer and helps to drive costs down. Not to mention motor oil isn't subject to excise taxation ... that is ... unless an oil change shop charges a made up environmental fee.

Gasoline has a completely different delivery and retail system, too.
Imagine if the soup you bought was shipped on tankers, then through pipes, then by truck to you local soup station where you got it pumped into your sauce pan. And of course bottled water is way more expensive than gasoline, and it's WATER for gosh sake.

Those are all factors that go into the pricing of gas & oil, but as far as raising the price so dramatically and so quickly, the biggest question is, will people still buy it? Gasoline...you betcha, and they could (will) probably raise it more. Motor oil? Bump it 25% and see how much of it you sell.
