I went to Max Maven's show last Friday at the Center for Inquiry in Hollywood with a group of friends, and let me tell you it was terrific. I went with four laypersons who were stunned and shocked by everything. They had never been so fooled by a magician or mentalist.
They (and myself included) found his performance highly entertaining with a terrific amount of comedy and intellectual thinking. We are going to try and make another trip back with a larger group of friends. The show is VERY good. I cannot stress that enough. The mentalism is terrific, the comedy is hilarious, the entertainment quality is very high. It is 20 dollars at the door or 10 dollars if you book it on Goldstar before 3PM the day of the show. He is performing an open ended run at the Center for Inquiry at the Steve Allen Theatre in Hollywood. We grabbed some dinner just around the corner at Fred 52 (great burgers and fun atmosphere). The location itself is a little dicey and we were wondering where exactly we were when we arrived. (What is the Center for Inquiry anyways?). http://www.maxmaven.com / http://www.steveallentheater.com/ I highly recommend the show. Max, the way you end the show is INCREDIBLE as well! One of my favorite endings of any show I have seen. Terrific all around. Try and catch it and at 20/10 dollars it is a STEAL (2+ hour long performance). |

I saw it in Chicago. It is a tremendous work and highly recommended to anybody who loves theatre -- not merely magic, but theatre. Brilliant.

I saw this last month and I too, was floored.
It's not so much the effects that killed me (although those were excellent) but rather Maven's tremendous showmanship. The man absolutely COMMANDS his audience. He keeps you on the edge of your seat with his anecdotes, stories, jokes, and various verbal flights of fancy. After seeing this, I believe Maven is the greatest performing mentalist alive. I did not know about the 10 dollar discount, that makes it so tempting to see it again at such a low price! Something I've been thinking about... if you remember in the show where he talks about having an experience, "With the pleasure so exquisite, the pain so exstatic, that I wanted to die. Instead, I learned how to do this...." he then leads into the next effect. Do you have any idea what he was talking about there? I have some ideas, but I figured also that it was intentionally ambigious. GREAT show. By the way, in the course of 2 hours he performed something like 10 effects. The rest was pure showmanship. A lesson to be learned there, I think. |
