I would recommend sticking with what you know. Tossing out untested, and under-practiced material at a paid gig is seldom a good idea. There is some good stuff on the garcia project, but I would work things out and practice a bit first. Congrats on the gig, and let us know how it goes.

There's a comfort level that your body language will broadcast to the audience when you perform your "tried and tested tricks". It demonstrates professionalism.
Lots of magicians fall into this trap, though. There's absolutely nothing wrong with expanding your repertoire, but do it for the right reasons. Case in point, yesterday I did a 200 person strolling event with another magician. I did maybe 6-8 different routines throughout the event. The other guy did probably closer to 30 different routines. He kept running back to his two magic cases to grab different props and effects. He also apparently lost some ropes and rings. In the end, do you think the audience thought he did a better job than me just because he did more tricks? We both entertained the audience and that's what counts.

Ive got tried and tested and I wouldnt put something new in unless I was 100% comfortable performing and presenting it, its a work colleague whos hiring me to work his party, prob 30 guests, just wondered if there was any good workable tricks on the dvds ive got coming that can be learnt in a week and practised for a week

Hi, beds. Wow, I'd be concerned if I had just a week to learn and master a trick. For me, it usually takes quite a while - first to learn the moves, understand the principle behind it [how and why it works as it does] then to put them over confidently and to have patter to accompany. As other's suggest, I reckon stick with what you already know. Put it across as entertainingly as possible - an apparently simple and quick trick can be extended considerably time-wise without being too slow paced or boring. All the best, MagiCol.
The presentation makes the magic.

Beds,
SCH is spot on! If you look at magic as "learning a trick" then you're in the art for the WRONG REASONS!!! When I decide I'm going to learn something new, it takes me about 1 month or longer to work out the handeling. Then another month to really polish and come up with my presentation...a few weeks of throwing it out in front of my wife and other friends, then to show my Magi friends, and THEN and ONLY THEN does it get put into my active repitore. Don't give Magicians a bad name by rushing in and doing new material TOO SOON! That won't do you or us any good!

Clean up. so many things can go wrong when performing something new. I'm not doubting your skill level. But if your being paid your services have to be impeccable. As you said this is you first paid gig don't want it to be you last. You only have once chance at a first impression. Just a thought. |
