Let's suppose you have only your deck of cards and a sharpie... go to the table and you said: Please take any card... and the person sais ( as many times happens to me) I don't LIKE CARDS TRICKS...I think you need to move to other stuff...Sponges, coins, rubber bands, bills etc, but you need something more. Its a crual reality MAGICIANS loves cards (I include myself )but more persons that we think don't like the "Please take any card" phrase...
Thanks, Hansel!

I remember thinking about this very same issue when I first got started working. I learned a rope and ring routine, some rubber band magic and some finger ring magic. I mixed them in and it was ok but now I find myself sticking to the card stuff.
I think that too often we worry about what tricks, or indeed what props an audience will find interesting when in reality of course it is the man behind the magic that has to make it interesting. In my experience, performance is empathetic - whatever you're feeling the audience will feel as well; if you're having a good time, that will help the audience to havea good time also. That means to me that your selection of material is far more important to YOU than it is to THEM - if you get enjoyment out of card tricks then that is what you should do. Do what you enjoy, do it well and concentrate on being entertaining - whether that means being funny or being mysterious. My repertoire has evolved over the years - some tricks have come, some have gone and some are constantly developing and being reworked - I should imagine that any working magician here will say the same. I kept the rubberbands because its really strong, fun magic and now I incorprate rubber bands into the card magic as well. One of my first purchases in magic was the lethal tender coin set, and now its an integral part of the Paul Harris "Reset" trick. So stick with what you're good at, but take a look around at other genres of magic and every now and then you'll find something that you can work with. Also, don't feel that everything you do has to be complicated or difficult to execute - the strongest items in my repretoire are almost completely self working! Best of luck with your gig, David.

I've done a LOT of restaurant work, and I've done a lot of strolling at parties, banquets and hospitality suites.
I can tell you this -- it's not your material as much as it is YOU. First -- if you aren't funny, you aren't funny, so don't push it. Pleasant and charming will go a lot further than strained comedy. Second -- People like variety. I can do about 2 hours of very entertaing, captivating card tricks. I generally do two, holding a couple of others in reserve, depending on the place I am working. Third -- If you are performing at a restaurant, remember that your cards will last you somewhere between an evening and a week, depending on how messy the fingers of your spectators get to be. So it's best not to work with them WHILE they are eating!!!!

Wow. Bill nailed everything with this sentence:

On Sankey's "The Real Work on Restaurants and Bars" DVD, he introduces a nifty idea based on the same concept (Did anybody lose a button?). I've tried the effect on a few tables and it's a darn good one. At least one person at every table checked themselves to see if they lost a button - which speaks volumes about the effect's relevance in today's world. Quote:

I asked her kids if they do. They said yes - so I continued with an ACR. Mom came around right after the first reveal.

Bill hit the nail on the head. If you are entertaining, they will enjoy it. I have a buddy who does the funniest routine with only a squeeker and one sponge ball, so it is not the tools you use it is the way you perform with them.
That being said, I have seen table hoppers get brushed off because cards are all they do. I would hate to hear someone say "Oh no, not another card trick".

Me too, but, I would clean their clock with my card magic. I love cards, but, I think most magicians pick terrible card magic to perform. |

Unfortunately, most do. A lot of magicians also seem to think that the effect "sells itself" rather than the scripting and patter.
