I, like many magi, love the bill switch. Recently I have been looking at terrific routines by Jay Sankey (100 miracles) annd Nathan Kranzo (bill plots). I like there approach to using the switch yet I notice that all of their effect involve just a single switch/change.
A single switch/change works great in a show but when I perform close up, I usually walk around and need something more resettable (?). I usually switch a 5$ bill to a $100 bill and back again or something similar. I have had good reactions but get the feeling that it can be somewhat anticlimactic. I would like to try some of these new routines but can't run to the bathroom to every 5 minutes without looking suspicious. Is there a convenient way to reset withou changing back or do I have to sacrifice impact for convenience? |

Not certain exactly what you mean however I have done a 2 phase switch routine for years doing the 1 to $100 then offering to do it with the spectators bill as they always ask.
While they get it out, I get out my marker, getting my mismade bill into position in the tip instead of the 1$ that got left in it from the switch. I have them sign their bill, I set my keycase on the table as collateral while I use their bill. I then do the change into the mismade bill. I act surprised and shocked it did not work. I ask them to look for their signature on the bill. They fail to find it. I ask them if we can try again with a larger bill. After the laughs subside, I mention that we might look inside the keycase, which I unzip and open, exposing their folded up bill inside. They take it out, unfold it and find their signature on it. Its a killer 3 phase full circle routine that actually gives you a beginning, middle and end. The keycase is an effect called key-ruption by bob solari magic, which I believe he still markets. Check his site I'm sure its there somewhere. I've been doing it in restaurants, bars and clubs for 20 years or so and it never fails to amaze. |

What a great routine, thanks for sharing Mr. Storms. I am curious about key-ruption and might have to check it out.
I guess my question in relation to your routine is: what do you do with the 100$ to reset for next time? Or do you need time alone to refold the 100 and the mismade. Yours is a good example of an excellent routine that doesn't immediately reset (I think). Other ones I've seen and read about involve altering the bill (like making it appear burned) but if I switch the bill back to its unburned condition - it practically screams SWITCH Yet if I leave the bill burned I need a moment to refold and reset for the next table. |

When you're done with my routine the way I do it, I just fold the mis made and $100 back up and put it back in the tip - I don't really consider that a reset - I do it in like 3 seconds as I go from one group to the next or one table to the next. To call it a reset I think would be to call putting your cards back into the box a reset. Its just a quick refolding of the bill that's already folded and creased so its mere seconds.
Key-ruption was just another thing that sat in my drawer many years ago until I came up with the whole 3 phase routine I described above - I fried a table full of magicians with the routine many years back, they just didn't see it coming. Have fun with it and try it out I think you'll like it. Really all the heat is on the mis-made bill when you toss it onto the table so you have all the time in the world to do the dirty work with the signed bill. It's a piece of cake. |

You could pick up a copy of John Lovick's, "Switch" for more alternative handlings and presentations than you ever thought possible.
Also very worthwhile is Elliot Bressler's e-book SwitchCraft (search here on the Café for it, and you'll find the link). Both are excellent reads.

Give Bill Pryor at Haines house of cards, he has a nice change that goes from $2 to 2 singles to either a $20 or a mismade bill reset is automatic.

As mentioned the Switch book does discuss the anti-climatic nature of switching back to the lower denomination. The book does have a description of how to motivate changing back to the smaller bill, and it does provide for some good humor.

I usually use the front to back routine when I use the bill switch, and it can be done in a way that instantly resets.
If you don't know what the front to back routine is, it's when you write "front" on the front of the bill and "back" on the back of the bill, and then it switches so the front says "back" and the back says "front". But if you do it once, you can do it again later with no reset, but this time write "back" on the front and "front" on the back, and you just fix it so the front is the front and the back is the back. Front front back back back front front back front back back front back back front front. Confused yet?
