I ordered a Morelli Ring Flight directly from the Viking Mfg. Co.'s "Collector's Workshop." It arrived today. Reading the directions, I'm thinking, "hey...this is very cool." One problem: The directions state how to push the locking sleeve forward; stating that will attach and lock it. Simple enough; but it doesn't do anything close to what I would consider "locking." The directions state that the key ring is to be handed to the spectator to unscrew the sleeve and retrieve their ring. If I hand this thing out - or even take my hand off of it, the sleeve will slip, exposing the method in all its glory.
For those that have this item: Is the locking of the sleeve more complex than the directions state or than it seems it should be? I can get mine to "lock" where it looks good as long as the key ring doesn't move. If it moves, it literally will expose the method. NO WAY can a spectator touch this thing. I figure it's one of three things: 1. I was taken for a ride and this is a lousy product, (based on comments made on this Café, I assume that this should be a quality item). 2. Engaging the lock is accomplished by a method not explained in the directions and not apparent to one examining the item, (again, I can't imagine that this is the case). 3. I have received a defective item. Also, on Viking's site, they claim that ALL of their ring effects come with a ring-vanishing cloth. I assumed this was a "ring effect," but it came with no cloth, (though the description of the effect indicate the use of the cloth). If you have one, did it come with one of Viking's rng-vanishing cloths? I don't have to have one to perform the illusion; but I was expecting one based on the claims on their site. ...I just want to get an accurate understanding of how this thing works, (in case I am missing something), and if it was supposed to come with a ring-vanishing cloth before I make a complaint to Viking. Thanks. |

Well, if what I have is, in fact, the way the item is designed to operate and the "locking" function isn't as strong as I assume it should be for spectator handling/investigation; then I've simply spent money on an effect that is less than what it claims to be. No big deal. Either it will sit on a shelf in my house and forever be unused or I will find a way to use it despite its weakness. It wouldn't be the first time that has occurred in my magic career. If I'm doing something wrong, then the expertise on this board will certainly be helpful in getting me on track again. Perhaps it was a lapse in judgement by posting my inquiries prior to calling; but perhaps not. Having two other Viking products, but not having dealt directly with them before, I know they produce quality items; but don't know what kind of service they provide. I do, however, know the expertise floating around this board at any given time and thought I'd give that a whirl prior to filing any complaints to Viking. For all I know, I've received a perfectly designed item and, through no fault of Viking, I may be the victim of my own stupidity. I don't know if they can help with that or not, but I know someone on this board may. Some guidance to my inquiries would've been more helpful; but I appreciate the advice/direction even if it was delivered in the form of a rebuke. What is done is done and what it is, is. I will attempt a call to Viking tomorrow. |

George sent me an e-mail with a greater explanation than the instructions.
It seems there is a counter-clockwise twist that locks the mechanism. That was not mentioned in the instructions. I do, in fact, have a working Morelli Ring flight. Cool. It was also acknowledged that the wording on the site, (regarding the inclusion of the ring-vanishing hank with every ring effect), was vague and that the hank only comes with a few, specific tricks. But it is that counter-clockwise move that I was hoping to find from those on this board who work with the Morelli Ring; which is why I posted here prior to having contacted Viking. Nothing more to see here. This isn't the post you're looking for. You can go about your business. Move along. |

Mine works like a champ - always has. All I have do do is pull up on the medallion, and slide my hand toward the keys. This locks it tight enough to hand to the spectator. At that point I do tell them to remove the ring by UNSREWING the gizmo, if you don't they'll start pulling and yanking on everything.

All three of mind work like a champ! I’ve had and used them for a couple of decades now.
Putting the ring on and locking the prop is done in the action of taking it out of my pocket (as described in the instructions I got with the prop). Like Jim, I also will tell the spectator to unscrew the collar. The one or two times that someone has pulled the thing apart, I simply go on with the routine as if that was expected. In fact, I let the collar come away from the wire so that the difficulty of reassembling it becomes apparent. Imagine doing the laborious reassembly instantly in your pocket.
