Ok,
I was thinking to myself (which is really scary) when as magicians are we happy with an act or a move, ive been working on a act for a long time but it seems that I'm never happy with it, its seem that it could be better evan after people say how great it is, I'm still not happy with it! so I gusses my question is when are you happy with an act! When can you say, WOW its finally done!?! Just wanted to see your thoughts?!? Kyle |

Very good question Kyle. I really am glad you brought this topic up as I think it is a great one worth discussing. In my own personal opinion only, I do not think one should or will ever get to a point of saying, "wow it is finally done". I think we just get to a point where we tell ourselves it is prepared enough to present.
My reasoning is that as a magical artist, I should never get to a point where I say I am finished with it. If I get to that point, then I feel I stop learning. Magic is an art form where we always are continuing to learn and educating ourselves and rethinking and reworking our acts and shows. I know there are routines I have created and performed for years but I will never be done with them. I am happy with how thay have turned out and I am happy with the direction they have gone in. But for me, magic, acts and routines are kind of an organic thing that kind of has a mind of its own. It evolves over time. It changes with the times and it evolves based on new influences in my magic. Just some of my own thoughts. Kyle

I am happy when I have created an act and my audience likes it.

Aww the audiences reaction to what we perform is what I think fuels many of us. I have a saying that goes like this...
"My audience is EVERYTHING for without them I am just a lonely guy standing on a stage by myself." Kyle

But I think that is the sign of a professional. A professional will never thing or say to themselves the act is done. The act evolves and changes over time and aprofesional makes adjustements to it all the time. I think that is just the nature of someone who loves what they do and seek to be polished.

In my experience its a multi-level trick question. One the base level, when I create things that get the positive response and commercial outcome I designed it for, Im happy. But the inner self is much harder to please....can I reach my 'nth' level of performance? Will it convey my artistic gleanings as well as the practical aspects. On one level I long for that moment of "yes" but on another..lets hope we always stay hungry for that perfection.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

To me the audience is my judge. It all depends on their applause. If the applause is good. I am happy. If the applause is low, I know I got some more to do.

I hope this doesn´t come across as arogent, but,... thru the years I´ve had moments when I FELT, "ahh, that was it!" It didn´t JUST all worked out,... it went even better. Moments that felt like, "I could die now, and not miss a thing."
There are these moments. There are `perfect shows´. You can´t predict them. You can´t plan them. You can´t demand them. You´ve just got to keep working at it, and let them come when they will. ....an Act that is `finally done´ though,.. hmm,...that sounds like stagnation. still working at it, gallagher |

My work is never completed ... even if the audience likes the routine.
Besides working on the technical aspects of the routine, there are also presentation factors, scripting and routining and patter for different types of audiences. Different types of audiences will see and perceive a magic performance in different ways. In my opinion, what works well with one type of audience segment may not work well with another. My routines are never complete ... by that I mean it is complete for some audience segments but not ready for all kinds of audience with diverse culture. My work is therefore not complete even if it looks complete by others. Just my two cents. |
